Some embedded album art displayed, others not! help please!

Hi,
I've been using rockbox for my Sansa e260v1 for almost as long as I've had it (about 6 years, I think), and it's been really great. However, my music collection has grown too much to keep a representative selection on my MP3 player without creating randomized playlists. And I love having the big album-art skins, so I need embedded album art to make the transfer easy (unless anyone knows of a way to build a random playlist and have the folder's art go along with each MP3 that is sent?) So when I checked back here, I was happy to see embedded album art is now supported. I updated and for the most part everything seems fine.
I've found a variety of different options and scoured the internet for making sure my album art is embedded in all my songs, mostly using mediamonkey (and some scripts with it). I also had to do a lot of manual album art embedding with that. At this point, I'm almost 100% sure that all of my MP3s have embedded album art, they even show up in the preview (bottom left) on Windows 7.
Here's the problem: when I move them to my MP3 player, only some of the songs display album art (maybe half) and the others don't. Can anyone help me figure out what the problem is? Is there a certain way of doing the embedding or a specific file type I have to embed or anything else that would make some album art work but not others? I've already had (for a long time) all of my album art in the corresponding folders, and usually it's .jpg, though occasionally .bmp (like all the files I previously needed for putting it on Rockbox), and very rarely .png. Is there a special way I should automate the process to make certain selections or save the album art as a certain type ("cover", etc.)?
Any help would be greatly appreciated! If I can only see half my album art, it's really not that nice - I'd love to see it for each of the songs, and it's on shuffle, so they change all the time. Thanks for your time!

MP3. Though some might be .mp4 . But definitely some of the ones with the embedded art not showing are still .mp3.

Check for jpegs that are in "progressive" format. Rockbox doesn't support that. PNG isn't supported either.

Sorry it took me a bit to respond. So, I tried re-extracting (to .jpg) and then re-embedding all the album artwork just to be sure there weren't any .png's trying to sneak in there. When I re-checked a sample of my album folders, I could find all the .jpg files (properly named too) like I'd expect, but still they're not ALL (just some) working on my MP3 player! Also, how can I check to see if the .jpgs are in "progressive" format? I know how to save it like that in Photoshop, but I don't know where to look to see if that's the case with these files. I couldn't find a tag with that info in Bridge either. Any clue?
PLEASE give me any help you can! I've spent hours and hours and hours on this trying to make it work, and still to no avail (consistently that is)! It seems like maybe about 50% of my album art shows up on the MP3 player and about 50% doesn't. That's not very good odds considering how much I love seeing the album art while I'm listening to it.
I've been using Media Monkey and the plug-in scripts to try to make all this work. As far as I can tell (looking at the files in Explorer and Adobe Bridge) - ALL of my mp3s (and m4as) have album art embedded now, and I'm assuming they're all the .jpgs embedded (after all the work I went into with MediaMonkey, to embed the links, extract the embedded images as .jpg, and then re-embed them as the covers. It took a long time and it sure looks like it works on the computer, but it only half-works on the MP3 player! Please help!
Do you display all of your embedded artwork on your MP3 player? IF so, what process did you go through to embed it all properly?

I had this problem at first. I just re-embedded by Album art using mp3tag and I have had no problem with rockbox and album art ever since!

Thanks for the suggestion Knob! I have MP3 Tag (the same program you suggested) but I can't figure out how to use it to do what I want. The only option I see on there is to find a tag source for cover art (an internet option it looks like). Is that really the only way? Is there no way to embed the album art from the corresponding album art files in the same folder?
The reason I want to do that instead of the internet option is two reasons: 1) many of the albums I own and listen to regularly aren't really easily found on sites like Amazon (a lot of underground and independent stuff), but I've already gathered their album art in their folders on my computer, and tried tagging them with Media Monkey. 2) even for the ones that are found on Amazon, I'm actually living in Madagascar where my internet bandwidth is both slow and capped. So, since I've got about 15000 songs, I'd prefer not to search the internet for all their album art again.
Please let me know if you can give any more help about how to use MP3Tag (without the internet), or another method! Thanks!

In mp3tag you should be able to right-click the album art icon (lower left) and choose Add Cover. You can then browse to find your local jpg file.

I add all my cover art manually. I found I had to remove and then re-add the same album art sometimes to make it work.
No need to re-download again at all, just re-add it, and mp3tag is all you should need, just right click on the album art icon as yapper described. Hope this helps.

Hey guys, thanks for all the help! Actually, before I could check the responses, I tried out a new thing (basically, the same thing as your responses) yesterday with a function in the AlbumArtTagger in MediaMonkey. (Then I moved houses today, so I didn't reply sooner.) The reason I've been enjoying MediaMonkey and wanting to focus on it is the batch functions I can do with it... since I have such a large music library, I didn't want to have to do EVERY album one at a time.
First, I saw that many of the albums with album art that weren't working had multiple pieces of album art embedded (I could see that easily in MP3Tag), and many of the albums that worked fine only had one piece of album art embedded. So, I had MediaMonkey do a batch REMOVE all artwork on all my songs. Then I had it do a batch re-add album artwork (from the album mask to the embedded tag), so that each song has only one piece of embedded artwork and it's definitely a .jpg, and now it works! Well, it works for about 95% of it anyway, which is WAAYY better than before. With the few I've found that don't display artwork, I'll probably do what knob said though and manually remove and re-add. The process of doing the "batch" on MediaMonkey took a good 5-6 hours for my whole music library, which I'm sure is way better than doing it manually, but still not something I want to do again.

Is there some reason you can't use a single 'folder.jpg' inside your album folders? Even during random play rockbox will still display whatever folder image you have inside that track's folder. Or do you not use an album sorted file structure? If not, you can still use a single jpg for each album, simply called %albumtitle%.jpg somewhere rockbox can find it, as long as your files are tagged properly it will display the proper art. Honestly embedded album art is so deprecated, a waste of space, and so problematic at times. I used mp3tag to specifically strip all that out of my not personally ripped tracks, and replaced it with single clean folder.jpg files sourced from wikipedia
. Hell you can even specify specific images for each track you have by simply including a %tracktitle%.jpg, there's just no reason at all to use embedded art, it breaks too many things.
*edit* Just realized what you are trying to do, moving playlists and files, in that case I would recommend simply keeping a bunch of album.jpg files permanently on your player, and stripping out all the embedded crap. The jpg files won't take up much space and consequently stripping the art from your files will SAVE space.

Just for anyone searching this later...
I found the album art wouldn't be applied to the mp3 if it was playing or open in any player. Like it can't update the file to add the art while it's in use. But there's no error to tell you this, well wasn't for me. Seems simple but it worked after about 20 attempts to add a pic to a song
Got me a few times since too.

Hi Jason!
Thanks for updating this thread although it was inactive for some time!
Just some days ago, I discovered the album art functionality for myself, and I still have a lot of trouble with it.
Only about 30% of album art is displayed in Rockbox. I'm still trying to find a clear solution in my case. And your update might help me fix it in the end, who knows :-)
Best,

Frequent reason for AA not working in rb is use of progressive jpeg which IS NOT supported. This is explicitly stated in our manual anyway.

Hi wodz!
Thanks for making that clear again. I read about those progressive jpeg problems already, and it's good to know that it is OFFICIALLY not supported. That might really be the reason of the problem.
Anyway, I have been struggling to find out HOW I can distinguish a progressive jpeg from those jpegs that are supported by Rockbox? Is there any way to find that out about a jpeg before embedding it?
Thanks,
RBNB
