iPod MK2431GAH upgrade troubles.. do I need to remove rockbox first?

(1/1)

All,

Tried to do the 240gb upgrade for my 2005 60gb iPod video (I am assuming that it is the original iPod video, not the 5.5, but not sure). I got everything hooked up but no joy, I get a sad iPod telling me to go to /itunes../support (or somesuch) alternating with a low charge message. This state lasts forever. If I put the original 60gb back in, all is well. I am using the clips, but the cable that attaches to the new HD is not as tight a fit as with the Apple original drive, but I'm pretty sure it's connecting ok. I guess I could use a spot of tape on the back of the connector to make it more snug.

2 Questions:

Do I need to completely remove rockbox to do this hard drive upgrade?

Has anyone heard of this before and is there a cure?

Thanks in advance.

On the ipod video rockbox only installs to the hard drive, so when you remove the old hard drive there is no trace of it left.

Many thanks, that's good to know. So what I have sounds like a hardware issue then. I cannot get  into disk mode at all. So, maybe I need to work on making the cable connection better. Not sure why it isn't snug as in the apple connector. They look completely identical!
Post Merge: May 11, 2012, 09:11:51 PMTurned out it was the ZIF cable. The cable was just plain loose when attached to the new drive, so what I did was to cut a thin square of anti-static plastic from the bag the drive came in and carefully inserted that on top of the ZIF cable to make the whole deal a hair thicker.

Everything just worked after that. Just informational for anyone in the same boat.
