Upgrading an iPod 5.5 gen with a Super Talent SSD drive

I plan to purchase a used 5.5 gen iPod (original iPod video) and upgrade it with a Super Talent DuraDrive ZT2 SSD. I'd like to know if Rockbox will have any issues installing after the upgrade. From what I know it's small enough to fit, run on 3.3 volts, and has a ZIF 40 connector, making it perfect for the device. Its been known to work, the Red Wine Audio people use the same brand drive for iMod upgrades. But from what I saw from the Hard Drive Wiki page, Rockbox tends to have problems on SSD drives. Has anyone tried it? Or does anyone know the particular issue(s) Rockbox has with certain drives?

Have you had any luck with this? I can get Windows and iTunes to recognize the 256GB drive. The standard Apple firmware seems to work without issue. However, I'm not having much luck with the Rockbox firmware.
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

After a little more research, I think my issue is related to disk size... not the fact it's SSD. I'm going to try enabling LBA48 and see if that resolves my issue.

I tried several IPod devices. Super Talent SSD (128GB) in IPod is only working with original Apple firmware .
It has nothing do to with the size because in the devices I checked out a 240GB HD (not SSD) and even
a 128CF Card (with CF to ZIGF adapter) worked .
I wonder why SSD causes problems with rockbox .

There were a few reports about misbehaving SSD in rockbox (in a few different players). There are two 'solutions': 1) Figure out yourself whats wrong. 2) Donate SDD to one of rb developers. This is OSS after all.

Ok thanks for your reply.
I hope my post was OK, because I think people shoudl know if a hw combination works with rockbox
or not because if they that a HW doesnt work they dont need to buy it .

Your post was perfectly ok. I just stated what can be done about this. There is 'Hard Drive Replacement' section on our wiki where you can (read as probably should :-)) document your experience.

According to
this post
on head-fi.org, the super talent ssd works with rockbox. But I read somewhere else, that not all 256GB are available, because the logic board can only handle up to 240GB and the ribbon cables need to be placed precisely.

I have a Super Talent 128GB Drive, which does not work with rockbox.
As mentioned I tried it in different ipods where a 240GB regular drive works without any problems .
Apple firmware with this SSD works, rockbox doesnt (boot problem/error) .
So it is not a cable problem because Apple firmware works and it is not a disk size problem because in the
same device a 240GB drive works .

Hello greeny,
the guy from head-fi.org has an 5G iPod, do you have such or a 5.5G? Maybe the logic board is not compatible.
One more thing I can think of is repartitioning the drive with 2048-byte sectors.
The wiki
covers that quite nicely.
Hope you can get your SSD working. Would be nice, if you could report back.
Greetings

Hi Wodz,
I am willing to send the devs my
zif to MSATA adapter and MSATA drive
to try and work out this issue.
Who should i send it too and where?

There is no need to send anything anywhere.
A developer already has a device to work on, the issue for that developer, is time. Patience please.

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.
