Upgrading an iPod 5.5 gen with a Super Talent SSD drive

(1/3) > >>

djpharoh:
I plan to purchase a used 5.5 gen iPod (original iPod video) and upgrade it with a Super Talent DuraDrive ZT2 SSD. I'd like to know if Rockbox will have any issues installing after the upgrade. From what I know it's small enough to fit, run on 3.3 volts, and has a ZIF 40 connector, making it perfect for the device. Its been known to work, the Red Wine Audio people use the same brand drive for iMod upgrades. But from what I saw from the Hard Drive Wiki page, Rockbox tends to have problems on SSD drives. Has anyone tried it? Or does anyone know the particular issue(s) Rockbox has with certain drives?

maddman79:
Have you had any luck with this? I can get Windows and iTunes to recognize the 256GB drive. The standard Apple firmware seems to work without issue. However, I'm not having much luck with the Rockbox firmware.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

After a little more research, I think my issue is related to disk size... not the fact it's SSD. I'm going to try enabling LBA48 and see if that resolves my issue.

I tried several IPod devices. Super Talent SSD (128GB) in IPod is only working with original Apple firmware .
It has nothing do to with the size because in the devices I checked out a 240GB HD (not SSD) and even
a 128CF Card (with CF to ZIGF adapter) worked .
I wonder why SSD causes problems with rockbox .

wodz:
There were a few reports about misbehaving SSD in rockbox (in a few different players). There are two 'solutions': 1) Figure out yourself whats wrong. 2) Donate SDD to one of rb developers. This is OSS after all.
