Noob advice - hot-swapping cards on Clip Zip
« on: May 04, 2012, 06:58:00 AM »
Hello

I bought a Clip Zip last month which I Rockboxed and have since managed to fill it and my 32GB card to the brim. The joy of lossless!

My question is do you think it's better to just keep collecting and filling 32GB cards with music to hot-swap, or to buy another Clip Zip or Clip+ so I don't have to keep rebuilding my database every time I put in a different memory card?

For some reason the auto-update feature is a little hit and miss so I was thinking it might be better to get another DAP to rockbox rather than just adding extra cards, but I'm interested in your feedback and experience on this topic.

Cheers

If you're going to be hot swapping cards, I would use the file browser.

Thanks for the advice. Do like using the database but will give the file browser a go and see how it goes. Think I'll also get another 32GB card next month and if hot-swapping is too much hassle then I'll get a Clip+

Wow, just seen an 8GB Clip Zip on Play.com for £34.99 with a free 4GB card on the side (that'll go in the wife's camera).

No need for hot-swapping now, just have to juggle players instead.  ;D

Heh, if you don't care about the colour then you could even save £2 by opting for the white model :)

I have a Clip Zip too, and I have four cards for it right now. I never considered getting an extra player, because that's just much more expensive than buying memory. Here's what I like about how the database works in Rockbox. It will not update the database unless I tell it to. One option, when putting in a new card, is to use the file browser for the first album, and have it rebuild the database while you're already listening to music. I also like that the database and playlists are independent of each other. Rockbox keeps playlists for music even when the card it is on is not inserted, and it can play songs in the playlist even when they are not in the database. For the card with my exercise music on it, I use a randomized playlist. I just put in the right card, go to the playlist, and skip the database entirely. It's a long playlist, and I'm just keeping track of where I left off in it. If I put in the card I was using previously, the database for that card is still there, because I didn't change it.
