Track Limit, ipod 5.5 240GB
« on: April 27, 2012, 03:57:23 PM »
Hello, and forgive me if this has been covered. I went many layers deep and searched and could not find a definitive answer.

I have a newly modded Gen 5.5 w big battery, 240GB and output stage mod. (sounds great via Xin amp and Etymotics!).  It seems I have been fighting track limits my entire mp3 player related life starting with the JB1, then JB3, a dabble into Archos and now the 240gigger gen 5.5 ipod. I get it that the player buffer and processor can only handle so much but I was hoping this new player could get closer to 40K tracks. My music averages out at about 5.85MB a song (high VBR lame).  With Rockbox on this new MegaPod can I get there?

Any comments, suggestions, etc are all gratefully accepted.

cheers everyone!

there is a limit
but its not based on tracks its based on file name size.
if you start renaming your mp3 file name by removing spaces and renaming things like "featuring" to "ft" and "remix" to "mix" and  " - " to "-" your player will suddenly be able to see more songs in your folder. i have the exact same player as you and had the same problem as you .
hope this helps you .

i have a mega massive chillout folder but the most i was able to get rock box to see was 8600 songs and that was after the file  renaming.   i doubt youll be able to hit 9000 songs much less 40,000 tracks unless you name each track "track1""track2""track3" etc...

i use a very good free program called   1-4a rename v1.56.0 superb batch renamer

hope this help feel free to ask more q if anything

there is a limit

I could be mistaken, but I don't think there is.

You're referring to the number of tracks per folder I think.  You'll be limited to how many you can view in a folder or playlist, but you can have an unlimited number of folders.

total number of files/mp3's in your folders all across your player = no limit

total number of folders anywhere = no limit ( that i know of or ever ran into )

playlist limit = limit depends on what you set it to in the settings i think max is 32,000

total number of files in any one folder (including root as the location) =  from 50 to 10000 (you have to set it in settings/limits)
BUT if each mp3 file name is named with to many characters then it will not show you 10,000 (for example) because there is a character limit per folder and you will have to rename your file names to be smaller = that is the limit inside the 10,000 max file limit per folder and it is very hard respect this limit when you have so many files.

i have run into this problem and have fixed it by renaming the file names using the program i mentioned above

have a great day guys/girls

i forgot to mention how i over came this limit and what you can do to play all of your songs....

load winamp on your computer
drop all your music into it from all the different folders you have on your rockbox with respect to all the limits i mentioned before
your win amp playlist should be 32,000 or less files
save the play list in your rockbox

start rockbox
click your playlist that you just made
and it will now play your 32,000 or less songs and shuffle them very nicely
i use this feature in my car all the time and i LOVE IT!

enjoy
