ipod video 5.5 1300mah battery is now in the wild (and 256gig drive)

I'm sharing this here because it was very hard to find

if you have a ipod video with a fat back - 60 or 80 or 240 gig your battery is 850mah
if you have a ipod video with a skinny back it is lower then 850 (i think 500 or 600 something mah)

The largest battery i was able to find for my ipod 5.5 was 950mah as of one year ago
so i am real excited about these 1300mah ones i just received mine and installed it and so far so good!

i am just letting people here know about it because i am sure many iPod owners would love the extra play time between charges

i also found a ssd 1.8" zif drive thats bigger then the 240gig toshiba
its 256 gigs and its over $500 and its confirmed to work with the ipod video
its on amazon and expensive so its not for everyone- but good to know.

i just did 2  different types of battery (1300 mah) bench marks

1- played songs at full brightness screen always on nothing plugged into headphone wps had left and right ch music bars blasting  ... result till player turned off on its own: 4 HOURS

2- played songs with screen off (lcd and brightness) nothing plugged into head phones
... result till player turned off on its own: 23 HOURS 
... total number of songs played till off: 197 SONGS

Have you actually done a battery bench on it? Many replacement batteries sold online, especially on ebay, have highly dubious capacity claims. I'd be interested to see if it really does last for the proportionally higher time it would if it was really that capacity.

Also, please don't misdescribe safety-related options when they are already explained in the manual :)

Setting USB charging to "force" doesn't mean "500mA current when available", it means "500mA current even if there's no evidence that this is available" - and it's well within the bounds of possibility that your USB hub/charger/etc might decide to catch fire if you do this and it can't deliver enough current. It's not the default for a reason. The default "on" will already charge at 500mA when connected to an active host who allows it. Patches to implement actual charger detection are welcomed :)

usb charge issue-

i have been using force on my ipod for over 6 months now 100% of the time
i have used it with usb hubs with out extra wall outlet power going to them
have used it on 2 laptops and 1 netbook
my car stereo including an ipod adapter that boosts the power so you can charge newer iphones using older ipod circuits
cheap china wall usb chargers 3 or 4 different ones in total as well as the tiny apple usb wall charger and the older bigger apple wall charger
plus i have built and given away 5 ipods with rockbox force usb enables to friends and family
.... all of that with zero problems , just fast usb charging in turn making this player even more amazing.

torne i know what your saying is true but i dont think it applies to the ipod video 5.5

It does apply to the iPod Video 5.5. I implemented this code myself and tested it on every model of iPod with a multimeter measuring current draw through the USB cable, so I can assure you I know exactly how it behaves. My main player is that model, also, so I charge it regularly and I monitor the charging process often when plugged into a variety of devices.

There is no need to use "Force" to charge from a computer, whether via a USB hub or not. The iPod will already charge at 500mA if the computer provides that much power, which it will in most cases, and if it doesn't (for example, an unpowered USB hub may not be able to provide that much power) then it will charge at only 100mA *even if* you select "Force", because the option is ignored if there's a computer to talk to on the other end of the USB cable.

You only need to use it to charge faster from a wall adapter, and only because we haven't yet implemented charger detection (which is possible, it's just not been done). Once this is implemented, then any charger that can be detected by the iPod in the Apple firmware (i.e. Apple chargers, compatible clones of them, and probably most modern mobile phone chargers on at least some models of iPod) will charge at full speed without needing to change this option at all.

Selecting "Force" *can* result in damage to hardware; the fact that this hasn't happened for you is not relevant, please don't tell other people to do something that is known to be unsafe (even if it's only unsafe in rare cases).

i understand torne , i have included a disclaimer in the last line of my first post. i am very grateful and respectful to your contribution to rockbox . i wish i was able to contribute to rockbox the way that you have . for now would you still like me to battery bench the new 1300 mah battery i just installed ? if so what should i do? i dont have a clue of what this process is...?
