You were perfectly correct. It just came back to life. Now, if I just plug it into the wall via the charger, will that charge the player or is there some special key combination I have to do to get it to charge?

If theres no USB host, it'll just charge. Hold a button if there is a USB host and you want to charge without mounting. FWIW, the manual does cover this stuff.

I saw that and if you read the post that started this thread, you'll see I did read it and I did get a message on the screen but it didn't indicate "charging" per se. That's what kicked this whole mess off. That's also why I asked the question.

I didn't reread the first post, no.

Ahh.
I did read the manual and the message I got when I did the keystroke was somewhat unclear. As I said it didn't specifically indicate charging and that led me down the garden path...
All good now though - I hope. It's plugged into the wall and charging and I'm quite happy to use the wall charger henceforth since I have noticed that even with OF, the Windows 7 screensaver produces unpredictable results with Sansa players.
Sincere thanks to all for the good help.
Hopefully I'll get up tomorrow to a fully charged ready-to-go black 8Gb + 8Gb Fuze.
Cheers!

The end of the story:
I've beenusing the Fuze V2 with RockBox for two days now. All is sweetness and light. Battery life is very good. Sound quality using Crossfeed, and the EQ with my Sennheiser CX-500s is excellent for this player. It's responsive, fast and the Cabbie Revolution theme makes it really easy for me to use (I'm visually impaired).
That's a "Happily Ever After" if ever there was one... :)
