Big problems
« on: March 26, 2012, 10:33:35 PM »
I decided to install this Rockbox because of the gapless playback, but now I'm having big problems and can't even use my iPod.

First of all, I have an iPod Nano and Windows.

When I first tried to install it everything was fine.  But I still had a bunch of music on my iPod that had been encoded and placed there by iTunes, and wanted to remove them.  I wasn't comfortable going into the iPod as a drive and deleting things like the instructions said, so I was going to sync it (to no songs) through iTunes.  Only after installing Rockbox iTunes would not recognize the iPod, which is by design I suppose.

So I decided I would uninstall Rockbox, then go into iTunes as normal and remove the songs, then reinstall Rockbox.  I uninstalled, but iTunes still would not recognize it.  I had to uninstall/install iTunes in order to get it to recognize my iPod again.  It was working fine, and I was able to sync/remove the songs.

So I go back to install Rockbox, and it gets hung up during the installation.  It said something about not being able to create a directory or something.  Now my iPod is completely inactive.

It just says:

Error!
Can't load rockbox.ipod:
File not found

When I plug it into the computer it is not recognized by anything.  It doesn't show up as a drive on the computer, so I can't manually remove the Rockbox software or anything.  When I plug it in the iPod goes to that "Do Not Disconnect" screen for a second, then goes to the "OK to disconnect" screen immediately.

Anybody have any ideas of what to do?

It's a 4GB, First Generation I believe

OK, I finally got my computer to recognize it, and I did an uninstall to remove what I'm assuming is only a partial installation.  The Rockbox Utility said it was successfully uninstalled, but when I disconnected it I get the same screen.

It actually matter quite a lot, so I hope you're right.

That means you removed the .rockbox folder, but did not uninstall the bootloader.  rbutility can uninstall the bootloader, but it probably requires you to be logged in as administrator/root on most operating systems.

I'm pretty sure it's first generation, that's what the auto-detect told me.  But anyway I got it all working.  Don't ask me how.  It involved uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes again, having iTunes restore it back to factory settings, reinstalling Rockbox, and several other things.  But it's working find now.
