RB new install on Fuze V2-lost my music and device is full, usb "unknown"

Isaansound:
I installed the latest version for my V2 2 days back. It plays fine, or..it did. I decided to delete some of the music I had loaded with the original firmware, but I get message "unknown usb device" when I try to connect with RB. When I boot it with original firmware, the whole file scheme has changed to RB style, and all the folders are empty, although the device is full. There seems to be some sort of charging conflict also, as I get very short battery life. When connected in RB it will play, and shows it is charging, but only lasts about 10 hours. Then when I boot with original firmware, it indicates battery only about 2/3 charged. From looking around at all the RB questions on the various forums, I'd say other people find RB less than user friendly.
wow, now it will play the songs in original firmware, but when i turn device off and reboot, it starts RB and displays connect usb cable. It has no menu, and none of the files show on my laptop. This really sucks!

This is definitely nonsense. Rockbox does not change the folder structure in any way. It adds a special folder (.rockbox) which holds the Rockbox installation but that's about it. My guess is that you're connecting the player in MSC mode and previously used MTP. With MTP the device can present a different folder structure that what's actually on the device. But that's a thing of the original firmware and has nothing to do with Rockbox.

There are also a lot of people that find Rockbox way more user friendly than the original firmware. I don't know the original firmware of the Fuze v2, but for most firmwares I know this definitely is true.

Rockbox does have a menu. And for the second claim, see the link above (again).

Please read the manual and search the web first

Isaansound:
Thanks very much!. It was in MSC mode.
The reason it wasn't showing files was because RB crashed and required a re-install. Now the files show.
Yes I did read and re-read the instructions.
"Older versions of Rockbox do not provide USB support. If you have such a version installed you need to manually boot into the original firmware for data transfer via USB."
Which leaves me asking..Older than what?? This is the latest stable release. It would be helpful if the instructions defined "older" I would hope that the current stable release would support drag and drop without booting the original firmware, but so far...not.
Perhaps one reason for this would be that I still get the "unknown usb device" error message when I plug the device in with the USB cable and RB enabled.
There may be a conflict at work here also.
1. RB crashed and become innoperative. Had to re-install.
2. re-install:bootloader wouldn't allow re-install to drive F where original install was located, and insisted on mounting to E, which is where my cd drive is normally found.
3. If I boot to original firmware, that side functions normally with file access.
So..should I clear out RB completely and install again? (I'm sure un-installing is in the instructions)

FWIW, we do have a port status link on the front page of rockbox.org.  Rather then assume something is working, you can check and see.

You don't have to reinstall if theres a crash.  You can just reboot the player.

Drive letters in Windows are arbitrary.  If you dislike the ordering, you can reassign them from the control panel.  Thats not something a USB device can control however, its up to the operating system.  USB devices actually have no concept of drive letters (and on systems other then windows have no drive letter at all).

You should never uninstall rockbox unless you no longer what to use it.  Doing so otherwise is pointless, and reflashing the Sandisk firmware isn't the safest thing to do.

Isaansound:
Sorry if I used the wrong term i.e. "crashed". When I turned it on, I got a blank screen with a command to plug in the usb. then when i did, it referred to the bootloader, as if there was no installation. I re-installed, and now its sort of working. I have functionality and can load and delete files if I boot to original firmare (v2.03.33a).
I still get the "unknown usb device" message if I boot from RB and plug in the usb to my laptop. I guess it's no big deal, but the documentation indicates this should not be happening.
