[Sansa Clip Zip] Rockboy framerate / crashing issues.
« on: March 23, 2012, 09:59:53 PM »
Model Number: BH1109CDLK-4GB
Sansa Firmware: V01.01.18A
Rockbox Version: 5513c6d-120322

I recently upgraded from a Clip+ to a Clip Zip and have noticed issues with Rockboy.

[Issues]

-Severe framerate issues, requires high frame-skipping.
-Maintain Ratio Screen Scaling crashes when rotating.

[Tested On]

-Metroid 2

The first is due to the slow CPU most likely.  The second sounds like a bug, so you should file a report on the bug tracker (link on the left side of your screen).

I cannot post on the bug tracker because it requires and additional account / keeps telling me "That user does not exist on this Flyspray installation".

Feels a bit unnecessary to create an additional account just to file a bug report, assuming that's what I need to do and it's not an issue with my web browser (Firefox with Script and Add blocker).

If necessary I will do so, but I'd rather not.

The CPU in the clip zip isn't *that* slow, it's faster than a lot of ipods. Another thing that requires a lot of time is the display update. Display updates are done over a 1-bit (SPI) interface. The SPI interface currently runs at only 6 MHz so a full screen update takes 96x96x16 / 6 MHz = 24.6 ms (or about 40 Hz max).

The clip+ has fewer pixels and those pixels only take 1 bit each vs. 16 bits for the clip zip, so for the clip+ the impact of the screen updates is a lot lower.

Alternatively, you can fix the problem yourself and not bother with the tracker :)

I'm confused.  The Visionox Display Co., Ltd. KPS-0054-Y02 pdf says "Interface: 8-bit 8080,8-bit 6800, SPI "  Why is that only 1 bit?

I think that the clip+ has the 1 bit interface and the clip zip takes 16 bits (maybe 8-bit 8080 + 8-bit 6800 = 16-bit), but I'm no developer. That's just what I understood from bertrik's post:

At the present time you will find the zip emulation to be more unplayable than the clip+ emulations due to the impossibility to read text on the zip.  The only reason for the zip is if you like doom.  So I would just downgrade back.  The good news is the zips are selling at higher prices so you can pocket some money for the downgrade.
