iriver H10 20GB update to 240GB
« on: March 23, 2012, 01:50:08 PM »
Hi, I'm new to the forum and this is my first post so HI! to everyone.
I was about to buy and ipod 160GB and looking on the web for something bigger I end up here and I found out that the biggest hard drives there is are 240GB.
I have an iriver h10 for many years now and I still used it a lot, I love the sound. I didn't know that you can upgrade the hard drive on it and know that is all I think about  :D
I found on this post http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php/topic,23896.0.html that you can upgrade the h10 to a 8mm hard drive but the open instructions on misticriver page are not there, has any one know where I can found them?
Should I change the battery to a bigger one with more mAh?
Thanks!

Hi, I bought the disk and I can said 8mm disk enter fine on a H10. I have many problems with the connection of the disk to the PC, I found an adapter 1"8 zif to 2"5 USB but only detected the disk once as a 128GB disc but didn't let me format it with Swissknife. After tried almost everything I'm sure the disk came bad so the seller on ebay will replace it a another one.
I make a clone image of the original 20GB disk with Acronis True Image Home 2011 and as soon as I get the new HD I will try to clone that on the 240GB, if everything works I will install Rockbox and tell you guys how it works.

You don't have to use an adapter in order to format the disk. You can just put it and do it through the player. You have to use the UMS mode (described in the Rockbox manual). Also you don't have to clone anything. You can just format it (FAT32), make "SYSTEM" directory, then copy OF file into it, from: http://daniel.haxx.se/sansa/h10-20GC/H10_20GC.mi4. Once you will have OF installed, you could install Rockbox :)

Hi, I'm going to do the same. See http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php/topic,42901.msg218180.html#msg218180
I wonder why you failed with yours. What disk did you use? Not every HDD will work 'cause some H10 HDD chip controller issues.
I tried it once with 80GB Samsung and it worked fine (and is still working, but 80G is far too small for me). Now I'm heading for 240GB Toshiba 2431GAH and AFAIK it SHOULD work.

You can format HDD directly in H10 or using an adapter ZIF 40 CF USB 1,8 PATA IDE Micro 50 like this one:
http://allegro.pl/adapter-zif-40-cf-usb-1-8-pata-ide-micro-50-a039-i3066200299.html
(this auction is Polish but you surely find it elsewhere, the picture tells all) - it costs less than $8 and I use it to check HDD and format it in FAT32.
THERE ARE MANY malfunctioning HDDs on the market. Lately I got very cheap one ($8, no laughs please) and it burnt an adapter. It could happen to your H10 too. Thus I would recommend to buy a new one from reliable seller.

IMHO the one and biggest problem is to properly insert HDD tape into ZIF connector of HDD - iRiver tape is somehow thick and you need to be careful. I broke one tape already and had it replaced.

Regards, Michal.
