Automatic Installation on Clip Zip
« on: March 23, 2012, 01:14:56 PM »
Hello, I just bought a Clip Zip and would like to put Rockbox on it.  I'm not very tech-savvy and was counting on using the Utility for the task.  Unfortunately i could never get past the device detection stage.  This is what I've done on my Mac:

- Moved the RockboxUtility programme to my 'Applications' folder
- connected the Zip via USB (on MSC mode)
- Opened Rockbox Utility

Inevitably I'll be prompted to by a "Your configuration is invalid" message and taken to the configurations window.  At the configurations window, under "Select your device in the filesystem", the name of the volume that is my Sansa Clip Zip shows up without the need to press 'refresh'.  Under "Select your audio player", I would also find 'Sansa Clip Zip (Unstable) already highlighted.

When I press "Autodetect", however, the message "Could not detect a Mountpoint.  Select your Mountpoint manually" comes up invariably.  But I do not understand, the correct Volumes name is already showing up under "Select your device in the filesystem".
And when I try to "select" the volume manually, by clicking on the bar containing the volume name, I find no other options, nor was I able to type into the bar at all.

In any event, I double clicked the only option there is: the correct volume name.  Then double clicked on the correct device in the menu below, and tried to continue by clicking "OK".  Then invariably, I am greeted with the error message saying "No Mountpoint given".

What am I doing wrong?  Please help, I'm rather desperate to get rockbox on my clip zip, that was the whole point of getting the device!!!
[does it have anything to do with the firmware on my Zip? I just upgraded it to the latest: v 1.01.18]

I considered the proposition of installing it manually, but I'm not very confident about that.  And even if I want to, I can't seem to find the release build suited for the Clip Zip.  I could only find a current build for the Zip, but I had the impression that current builds might be less stable and contain bugs?

What should I dooooo? ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

Thanks in advance for ANY help at all

Once you've selected the volume, just hit "ok".

There is no release for the Zip yet, its a really new port.

Please post the output of the Help / Troubleshooting / System Trace dialog after the problem occured.

Thanks for the reply, but I have no idea how to find the output of the Help/ Troubleshooting/ System Trace dialog... I'm sorry, really not very clever with these things.

In the end, I took the risk and successfully installed rockbox manually, though it took two attempts.

There is a problem though, it appears that when I transfer music to the Zip booted in Rockbox, I wouldn't be able to find those songs when I next boot the thingy up in OF.  Whereas if I load music while the Zip is booted in OF, I would be able to use the audio files under both firmwares.  Is that normal?

I think you need to have the player set to MSC mode in the sandisk firmware to see files added with rockbox.

It's in the menu bar (i.e. the bar at the top of the screen on OS X).

Sorry for this grave digging, but even though the current version claims to be released for the Clip Zip (release notes), the rockbox utility doesn't recognize any stable version. I only get "development" and "release candidate".
I take it the latter is to be considered more stable and less "nightly"?

The current version is Rockbox 3.12 which has not been released for the Clip Zip. The next version 3.13 is currently in the release process, but the release hasn't been announced. Anything you already see is just things as they are being worked on.

A release candidate is a test version made of the version that eventually will become the next release. Development versions are rather stable as well usually.

The manual download page says, that 3.13 is the current version. The release notes say

The release was half way through, as was said.  Try now.
