Hold Switch in Ipod Classic and Rockbox
« on: March 22, 2012, 09:36:33 AM »
Hi,

I would like to know whether Rockbox gives some kind of control on the behaviour of the hold switch of an Ipod Classic.

The reason behind my question is the following: I have an Ipod Classic and the hold switch appears to be broken and stays hold all the time, blocking all input and thus I cannot do anything with it  >:( I don't know whether the switch is directly disconnecting the electronics related to input processing, in which case the only solution is repairing it, probably for an exorbitant price, or whether the switch is merely activating a "disable" signal which acts on the input signals deactivating them at a software level. If the latter is correct a software like Rockbox could solve this problem if can have some kind of control upon this "disable" signal produced by the broken switch, disregarding it.

Would it be possible with Rockbox?

Thanks in advance for your help!

P.S. If it is not possible and anyone has a alternative solution, please, please, do provide it, as at present my Ipod is only acting as a paperweight  :'(

You could almost certainly disable reading the hold switch although I'm not sure how difficult that would be on the classic.

Thanks Saratoga for the quick reply!

Good to know that there is a way to disable the reading of the hold switch. But the end of your sentence is rather discouraging. If a developer and expert of rockbox is in doubts on how difficult would it be to do it, I guess it is hopeless for me to find the way  :(

Well I didn't work on the Classic (I don't even own one), so I'm not the person to ask about changing that port.

Ok, thanks for the clarification, Saratoga! Then I'll wait for some expert in Ipod classic that is kind enough to provide some hint to the solution.

The Classic disables clickwhell (and buttons) when the hold switch is ON, PMU disables automatically the clickwheel LDO, some time ago i tried to write this register to modify the behaviour, but seems it is read only, so at this moment i dont know if it is possible to deactivate it by software.

Thanks for the reply, prof_wolfff!

This is however bad news :( I will wait for a while to see if someone has a way to modify this register or in some other way disable the hold switch and otherwise I will have to try and shortcut the switch with tinfoil as explained in http://www.diylife.com/photos/ipod-fixing/747451/. It is not the same model so maybe it differs but maybe I manage to recognise the corresponding parts in mine...
