iPod video with 240GB HD and RockBox - how can I should format it?
« on: March 17, 2012, 01:51:20 PM »
I'm waiting the ipod video 5th generation and the Apricorn's 240GB Update Kit.
Well, when I'll format it, what do you suggest? FAT32 or NTFS? I know there could be some issues with RockBox, but not sure about which file system I need to manage.

You know? Thanks

Both the original firmware and Rockbox only support FAT32. You can, if you want, have other partitions on the device with other filesystems, but these will be ignored by rockbox. (a PC can access them over USB).

Yes Fat32, I have the same combination myself! Just hook it up to Itunes if you use it...and follow the instructions. Both the original firmware works and Rockbox. I only use Rockbox though....

I think I'll avoid Itunes... managing only RockBox and USB device transfer! Thank you!

iTunes knows how to format the drive correctly and set up the firmware partition; you can do this yourself with the manual restore instructions on the wiki, but it can be fiddly and occasionally doesn't seem to work for no good reason. Restoring the new drive with iTunes is reliable. Up to you :)

Uhm, so first i setup the new hd with itunes; later I install RockBox (which should remove original firmware?)

Rockbox don't overwrite the orignal firmware......you will have dual boot...Default your ipod boot to Rockbox....

Rockbox relies on the presence of several parts of the original firmware in order to boot. The iPod Video cannot boot at all unless the Apple firmware partition is present and contains several important boot images (including the firmware for the onboard video chip). Even if you don't use iTunes, you still need to create this partition and copy the Apple firmware into it before it's possible to install Rockbox, so unless you have absolutely no way to get access to iTunes on Windows, it's much easier to just use it.
