[Resolved!] MPEG Viewer has frozen my 2nd Gen iPod Nano.
« on: March 12, 2012, 11:40:40 PM »
I installed Rockbox on my 2nd Gen iPod Nano this evening, and all was fine and good (really, pretty awesome) until I tested out the Mpeg viewer. I hit play, the screen went black (but still glowing, clearly on), and it froze. I've tried pressing buttons, holding down buttons for several seconds, turning 'hold' on and off, even plugging the Nano into the computer (the computer won't detect it), but it absolutely won't respond to anything. There's no sound and the screen stays black.

Is there anything I'm missing? Something to be done other than leaving it sit for a few days until the battery dies completely? Any idea what caused this or how to avoid it in the future?

Update: Turns out the video conversion I used was the problem; I used one of the WinFF as recommended on the wiki and it works like magic. :D

Apple has instructions here on how to reset a frozen ipod nano:

http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/nano2gen/#

See if those work.

Oh for crying out loud I should have been able to figure that out. Derp. Thanks!

Now, though, I'm afraid to try the mpeg viewer again for fear it will freeze the ipod again.  Could it be failing to work because the resolution of the video doesn't match the resolution of the iPod screen?

I have no idea what happens if you try to play a video thats larger then the screen.  Its possible we don't reject those.

It seems the video resolution did matter; when I re-encoded the video to 176x132, the video worked beautifully. Unfortunately the sound did not, and I've yet to have success with the conversion programs listed in the wiki. :/ I'll keep trying though.

Edit 11:29pm PST: Finally managed to convert with WinFF! It works beautifully. I'd like to take this opportunity to profusely thank the developers for such a fantastic OS & Plugins! It's really awesome to be able to breathe new life into my beloved old Pink Pod. :3
