Rockbox device as remote control and display for embedded devices with USB
(1/1)

Hi!
I want to order a RaspberryPi mini computer (http://www.raspberrypi.org/faqs), which has an ARM processor and USB ports. It is capable of running Linux and is supposed to be the first step into embedded device programing etc. As is it for me, so I was thinking about possible applications.
I used to have an IPod Video running Rockbox and after it broke, I got my self a Sansa Clip+, of course also with Rockbox. The Ipod was capable of registering as an HID device (Sansa Clip+ not for some reason?), which would be already great to use it for some extra buttons for the RasPi.
My idea now is to have a plugin/application, which registers as a special display device to the PC/Embedded device, the MP3 player is connected to. It should clear the display of the MP3 player and wait for instructions from the PC.
I don't know if there are already standarts for USB displays, but one could also write simple drivers to control the Rockbox display. Simple text would already be great.
I don't know, if I could get across my idea. What do you think? Is this possible? Is somebody else interested in this?
I think this could get a very interesting thing with the Raspi or comparably capable devices.
Hope for replies!

I don't think it will be simple, since nothing about USB is simple, but yes its possible.

That would be sooo good, if one of you geniouses could do that!
After some delivery problems, my RasPi should be on its way in a few weeks. And when it's here, I would really love to dig in the host driver programing part...

I am looking for the same features actually.
I have done some research and hope that it will be possible to include something like this in rockbox.
i am running anmpd server and would like some info being display on my rockbox while the rockbox device is connected to the server.
I found that someone created an emulator for palmos to receive simple data maybe that could be a starting point.

Ability to control a computer from Rockbox would be great for example for controlling displayless servers like NAS (network attached storage). QNAP recently added official support for USB soundcards to their NASes and controlling the playback from a rockboxed player could be useful.
