Rockbox and Floola used together?
« on: March 04, 2012, 02:41:32 PM »
hi.

for my music management on my ipod i use Floola and Rockbox. i use floola to add videos and lossy tunes to my ipod. and i use rockbox to add lossless tunes to my ipod. the reason why i use floola for the formats mentioned is cause i wasn't sure what directory to place the lossy tunes in on my ipod in windows explorer. and i don't think rockbox supports mp4 playback for my videos. im still learning rockbox so im sorry if these are silly inquiries. i just tried to add some new stuff to my ipod using these two programs and now when i boot to the main ipod menu nothing is in my database but if i boot to rockbox everything is there music wise. this happens sometimes and is a pain in the butt to deal with. can anyone suggest any solutions so that i can store my music using just rockbox and videos too if possible? and where i should put them directory wise.

i'd really appreciate some help from someone on this. thanks in advance.

You won't be able to play mp4 video, but you should be able to listen to  mp4 audio.  If you want things added so the apple firmware can see them, you have to add them with iTunes or similar tool, not drag and drop.  Only rockbox understands that.

Hey Link80,

I suppose you have a 5th generation Ipod, don't you? When you speak of lossy sound formats, what exactly do you mean. Rockbox supports so many formats I can't imagine yours not being supported. Check http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/SoundCodecs to see if your formats are supported.

You are not sure where to put your lossy format sound files? Just place them in any folder you like (just not the .rockbox folder) using drag and drop in the explorer and you should be fine. Just create a folder for music and one for videos in the root directory of your player.

I don't know floola, so I can't tell why your files aren't showing up in the original firmware. I personally use the program sharepod to transfer videos in higher quality to my iPod and watch them with the original firmware. Rockbox is also able play back videos, but they need to be in a specific format. With WinFF,  the  conversion is very easy, because this program comes with a Rockbox preset. See: http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/PluginMpegplayer#How_To_Encode_Files

I hope you can sort your problems out and enjoy Rockbox.

Greetings,

c_k

hey guys

thanks for the quick replys. appreciate it.

@saratoga

ok i kinda figured that rockbox wouldn't be able to play mp4 video but i wanted to be sure. i guess i'll just use itunes again but to add only video thru that program. cause i couldn't stand how itunes sorted my music and haven't used it for music management since.

@cereal_killer

yeah i have a 5th generation ipod. forgot to mention that. i also forgot to be more specific when i said lossy formats. i meant mp3 in my case.

cool, i will try that regarding folders. another silly question where is exactly the root directory of my player? the first folder when you click on your ipod from windows explorer? when i initially added my lossless tunes folder i placed it in:

L:\iPod_Control\Music

it recognized it in rockbox. but what if i want two folders for music? like one for mp3 and one for flac? will it recognize it that way? or is do you recommend just putting them both in one folder?

i recall now that after restarting floola that it said something about a incompatible itunes software on my ipod. maybe that has something to do with it. that happens sometimes to me with Floola. im getting sick of the hassles wiht that app so i think im gonna start using rockbox and itunes (for videos) for now on. but first im gonna check this program you mention called sharepod.

thanks for your help so far cereal killer and to you too saratoga!

In your example, L:\ is the root directory.

Rockbox doesn't care.  You can create as many folders as you like with any names you want.  The Apple firmware will of course ignore all of this.
