Rockbox, Micro SDXC cards, & variations of the software
« on: February 21, 2012, 06:46:17 PM »
Hi everyone,

I didn't know where to put this question either in the hardware forums or here so I decided to try here first. I currently have 2 Sandisk Sansa c250's. My first one which is black & uses a v1 of Rockbox & my pink one uses a v2. So far things are working fine. My first question is, if the v2 software runs fine on my pink c250, then why is it called unstable? My second question is about the new micro SDXC cards that are coming out, specifically the 64GB ones. Will Rockbox have support for them as well? Here's a link from amazon.com to show you what I'm talking about.

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=64gb+microsdhc&x=10&y=24

 Thanks.

Does it run fine?  I don't think anyone has had a c200v2 in a while so the status of that port is unknown.

I think they'll work if you format them FAT32, but I don't know that anyone has tested one since they're still quite expensive.

sorry this all a bit of a mess, but I'm adding info as I find it.

I have one, and I am willing to test.

I gave NTFS a go, worked fine through normal windows right click formatt, which I was told wouldn't work. however my fuze didn't recognise is on either Rockbox or it's Origional Firmware.

I have read a few reports of people succeeding in formatting these cards to FAT32, well actually just one amazon review, but I'm sure it's possible.
Any idea's on how to format it to FAT32, W7 can't. Any programs you know of that I shoudl try?

I have tried Fat32Formatter (http://tokiwa.qee.jp/EN/Fat32Formatter/) it does say that it's only for XP and vista, but I don't really think thats the problem as it runs. I also no longer have any platform running these OSes. I'll move on the real problem when I come to the last part of the Fat32Formatters process, (pressing a big start button) it waits a while then says "Failed to determine the drive!!".
I have tried both the Normal and Debug versions of this software. have yet to find any old versions though. (pre 1.1)

I am trying to format it with it connected to my PC through my FUZE, yet to try with annother device, cannot connect directly to the PC 'cause I don't have one of those USB readers and I skimped when building my PC so I don't have a built in one.

I don't know what version of rockbox I am running, and I don't really want to update as I have forgotten how I did it, but I remember it was a hell of a mission.

Any help/ random info will be much appreciated.

I have solved it, I will post it in it's own thread.

I haven't tried, but theres about 100000 guides on google to using dozen of software packages to format disks in Windows 7.  If you can't get that one to work, maybe just try something else?

You also need to actually change the partition type in the card's partition table to one of the FAT partition types, instead of the exFAT partition type. Formatting tools will almost certainly not bother to do this for you.

Silvershades, I can confurm that the cards do work, in my fuze anyway.

Thanks Saratoga, I eventually found a program that ran on my PC, I think the Fat32Formatter just had a problem with my PC. One W7 installation over about 6 PCs brings it's issues. I appolagise for that, I read that it only supported vista and XP on their sight.

thanks guys, I'm sorted now, and I posted a step by step guide for anyone as useless as me.

Oh nice.  Good to know our driver doesn't have any problems with them.

You didn't answer my question above about the c200v2. Is it completely stable? I want to mark it stable but no one has that player to test so I wasn't sure.

How much time have you spent with it?  Have you had any weird crashes or glitches?  Would you be able to leave it running for a day or so and see if it crashes (probably need to use USB power so the battery doesn't die)?

As far as right now I've only spent about 20-30mins with my c200v2. I mainly use my black c200v1 as my main & the pink c200v2 as a backup. The only "quirk" I've had with it so far is that whenever I power it up the blue, square-shaped ring around the menu button flickers briefly during startup then stops but other than that it runs ok. But I'll mess with it later tonight & keep you posted.

Cool.  If the device will play for 10 or 20 hours without any weird crashes, I think we could make it stable.

As of right now, I have let my mp3 player charge on my PC for about 3 hours. I have also plugged & unplugged it from my PC and it responds smoothly.  So far, so good. I'm going to take it to work with me tonight & give it a test run as well.

Just got home from work and the mp3 player is running like a top. I used it for about 2-3 hours at work and its running just fine  :)

@ChrisHaigh.
Hi,
could you tell us which 64GB SDXC card exactly are you using?
Also what version of the Fuze do you have?
Thank you.
