6th Gen 160gb + 5.5 30gb marriage

(1/1)

ted_dibiase:
I have a 160gb 6th gen that I'm not going to bother installing rockbox on, based on what I've read/researched.

However, I am thinking of buying a 5.5 30gb and trying to marry the hardware without purchasing an 'upgrade kit'.

If I take the drive, backcase and battery from the 6th gen, does anyone know will it couple together with the 5.5 OK?

[edit] - also I've read that the ram on the 30gb 5.5 is only 32mb of RAM. Does anyone anticipate any database size issues
that I've read regarding the playlist + meta information that's being stored as a result of the upgraded drive.
I'd like to know if this is the case with the 240gb drive upgrade also.

Thanks!

Depending on which exact 160GB model you have, that drive might be totally incompatible. Is this a "thin" or "thick" model (I assume the thick, since you want to swap backs, in which case you likely have one of those early classics with a CE/ATA drive that nobody else has ever used...)

RAM isn't going to be a problem. More RAM gives you longer runtimes, but that doesn't really depend on the disk size.

I have no idea if the battery and/or the back can be swapped.

If I were you, I'd wait a bit for the classic port to get more stable. There are some promising patches waiting to be integrated that should improve things a lot.

Thanks for the reply.

Sounds like there might be some juicy updates for the 6th gen soon then? :)
