Help/Warning: Error with HiFiMan HM-801 rockbox uninstall
« on: February 07, 2012, 11:29:40 PM »
I have tried to remove the HM-801 port following these instructions from Head-Fi http://www.head-fi.org/t/579759/how-to-installing-and-uninstalling-rockbox-to-the-hifiman-hm-801-603-602-and-601

I followed the instruction but the progress stopped at the part where you load the original firmware using the .exe. So I tried the process again but I keep getting some error messages but I can tell what going on exactly because the menu is full of the jumbled kind of symbols. I have attached a screen shot of the message I was getting. I have also tried several different versions of HM-801 firmware including the latest 0.21, 0.2, and 0.19.

If anyone has an idea what I may try to fix this problem I would deeply grateful, since while rockbox is very good so far on HM-801 but it still has one key feature lacking thats the USB dac/amp feature that I am dearly missing now  :'(
And for all that are thinking about installing rockbox on the HM-801, I guess this is my heads up to you.

I had the same problem myself recently, had to resort to shorting out the flash memory pins several times.
The good news is it is nearly impossible to brick rk27xx based devices, but you do need to be persistent with the recovery attempts. The device will always fall back to DFU mode at some point.

Try using "RK27BatchUpgrade_Image.exe" and tick the erase box. I found I had to keep trying several times in succession and hitting the upgrade button while keeping the device connected up to usb.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for that bit of info, where can I get this .exe I think the one I have been using is looks different from yours. Would I also have to short my 801 before running this exe?

Try to short out pins on flash chip instead of Step 3 in instructions from head-fi.

You need to find samsung flash chip and short out 5 and 6 pins from the bottom on the right side, look at this photo (this is photo of HM-601, but HM-801 had the same flash chip).
With connected 5&6 pins, connect player to PC via usb. After one or two seconds remove connection between pins.

Then follow steps 4-6 from instructions

Remove 4 screws holding the plastic cover. Insert sharp object between plastic cover and case, then carefully start lifting up the cover.

So I finally got everything opened and tried many times, Im starting to think the .exe I have is old or not as stable as the posted before. The menu screen on mine is in another language and is missing some option, while the one posted as RK27BatchUpgrade.

Thanks! It finally worked Thanks everyone I can now use the dac function again. Also for anyone working on the port for HM-801 Thank you for your effort I, its a wonderful thing that a group of people over the internet can get together a build such a piece of software. I will give it another go in the future, until then for me I will go stock for the DAC function but ROCKBOX is the best, keep it up!!

Mortalis: Thank you for all the work you've been doing on Rockbox for the HiFiMan, my 601 (in some ways) is monumentally better now. I am working to see if I can clear out some bugs, but I was just wondering if you had a place where you're accepting donations. I think a few people at Head-Fi, myself included, would be more than willing to make a donation for your work. Hell, if you get it stable, you should be able to Fang to hire you as a programmer.  ;D
