Clip+ keymap
« on: January 29, 2012, 03:19:24 PM »
The clip+ keymap annoys me.  A lot.

First, I have a lot of trouble getting this to work on my player:

Code: [Select]
Home + Select
If there is an audio file playing, return to the While Playing Screen (WPS) without stopping playback.

I tried about ten times, then asked funman, and apparently its not "Home + Select" so much as "Home, then Select" with a very, very narrow timing window.  Too quick and nothing happens, too slow and it selects the first item in wherever the home button would take me.  For the first dozen tries I thought it didn't actually work on my player due to the extremely tight timing window.  For me at least, on my specific player, this is basically unworkable.

Second, that is a really counter-intuitive and difficult to perform combination.  Even ignoring the issue my hardware seems to have with the combo, its arguably no easier then just hitting home to get to the main menu and selecting the WPS option in the menu.  For me at least, it seems to be much harder.  I really think we need to come up with something better.

Skimming the last few threads, I saw a few reasonable suggestions:

1)  Left arrow on main screen goes back to WPS.

Pro:  Not currently assigned, fairly intuitive.
Con:  Inconsistent with other targets (I think), might make it easy to get to the WPS by accident (although given that the home key will always get you back I don't know how big a deal this really is.)

2)  Remap home key on Main screen to go to WPS.
Pro:  Very intuitive, would allow double clicking the home button on any screen to get to the WPS.
Con:  Lose "back to previous" feature.

Frankly, I think either of these is better then what we have.  But I do lean towards #2 because I dislike having left do something on the clip that I don't think any other targets do (i think?).  Losing back to previous would suck, but I suppose we could give it its own combo ('Home + select' or maybe 'long press left' ?).

Am curious what people think.

I'm not sure I agree with either of those being "intuitive"...I'd argue the exact opposite, personally.

I for one don't find pressing the home key and having it take you to a different location based on your current position intuitive at all...its a home key, it goes home, that's what its for.

Secondly, << should always allow you to back out to the main menu and go no further, having it back out to the main menu, and then suddenly drop you in the WPS because you happened to press it one too many times is also pretty highly counter-intuitive in my opinion.

The keymaps exist the way the day now, simply because it works...start making changes for any one target in particular without changing all and Rockbox quickly becomes a mess where one is not able to pick up any single Rockbox player and for the most part have the keymap "just work".

People suggest changing  keymaps all the time, try searching the forum...there's a tonne of half-baked suggestions for a particular device that fail to account for similarity of keymaps between all other targets (which *is* intuitive).

To be clear, its already position dependent.  If you're in the file browser it takes you to the main menu.  If you're in the main menu it takes you back to the previous screen you were in.

So its not about intuition exactly, but rather if "back to previous" or "WPS" make the most sense for home. I'm thinking WPS makes more sense, and 'back to previous' should be remapped to some other combination.

This seems reasonable to me.

No they're like that because we never agreed on how they should be, and just left them at their initial state.  You may have become comfortable with the initial state, but your own familiarization is a weak justification.  Keymaps should be good in general, not just good once you've spent years grinding them into your mind.

What annoys me is that short clicking the down key (the one with the list/menu icon on it) on the WPS does absolutely nothing.  Why do I have to long click it to see the playlist?

Personally, I think that clicking the home button should take you to the WPS screen.  That is what I consider the "home" screen to be.  I think the home button should alternate you between the WPS and the main menu.

Try out the patch "FS#12288 - Sansa Clip+: "Home" in the main menu to WPS/Radio".  I found it to be the perfect solution.  It allows you to use the home button to get to the WPS and back to the previous location.  If you are using the radio instead of player, it functions in the same way.  I wouldn't mind seeing this feature on all the models, not just the Clip+.

Thanks, I had not seen the updated patches there.  They look acceptable to me.

saratoga, any chance for a clip v2 builds to test the new keymap?

I agree with cs96and. If short pressed, the down key does nothing but a long press takes you to the current playlist. I got used to that, but if  that was changed to just a short press I would like that.

Greetings,
