iPod Classic 160 GB 5G?
« on: January 26, 2012, 12:14:49 PM »
Hi
I have an iPod Classic 160 GB and I believe it is 5G. I am not sure about 5G but it is from 2007.
Now, I would like to install RockBox so that I can listen to Flac-files and get rid of iTunes. But when I read in device status it is saying that after installing RockBox I can only charge the battery "partial". What does that mean?? I will only be able to charge the battery half or what?

Best Regards
Captor

Sorry, I believe my iPod is a Classic NOT a 5G!
I bought it 2007-10.
According to the serialnumber check at apples webpage it is a pure Classic.

One of the developers closer the ipod classic could probably give your more details about what "partial" means here, but as far as I am concerned battery charging works perfectly on my players (ipod classic 80g and 120g). There are still things to be fixed with the USB, but nothing that makes the rockoboxed classics unusable.

To my knowledge, except for the HDD interface there is basically no difference between the 80/120g models and the 2007 (thick)160g you have, so this means you shouldn't have any issues with the battery charging either.

The port is not 100% functional, the players crash every now and then but overall they are usable and I am very happy about running rockbox on them. I recommend that you give it a try and see for yourself if rockbox is what you want or not.

PS. Welcome to rockbox!

Hi axismundi

Thanks for your reply!

What do you mean that the players crash every now and then? You mean during
playback without the port connected or do you mean with the port connected to a PC. If it is during connection I dont care because that don´t happen so often.
But during playback when I am travelling that would not be a good thing.

Now that you have RockBox in your ipod, what software do you have in the PC for downloading the music? It is not itunes I guess?
Myself are into using JRiver. Because I have that already in my media computer and all my song are in that computer already. So that would be easiest to use that for the iPod as well:-)

Hopefully some of the developers closer to iPod will anser as well.

You don't need any software to transfer music onto rockboxed player. That's why it's great you're not locked into any OS, as long as you can access the hard drive...

That sounds great. And will there be any problem to transfer tags and album art
at the same time when the Flac-files are transfered?

tags are within the file. Album art can be embedded or maybe a file within the directory. If I did a straight copy from flac to portable device it'll work, keeping album art, but if I do a fresh encode to vorbis I'd need to recopy the jpeg files.

Since my mp3 players don't have colour screens not fussed about album art.

It seems that nobody has answered this specific part already - the word "partial" does not mean you can "only charge the battery partially", but instead that the Rockbox port for the ipod classics is not yet fully functional (for some or other reason) in terms of battery charging.  I have no idea what exactly is incomplete, without doing some digging, but it could be something relatively minor like enabling the ipod to "notice" when a charger has been plugged in, or something else not actually affecting the physical charging of the battery.
