Screwed up partitions maybe. How did you convert it to fat32 ? Does the player boot?

i converted it using disk utility in OSX.  the player does not boot.  thanks for responding.  i really put a lot of time into this yesterday and totally thought i had it figured out.  i definitely agree the partitions are jacked.  any suggestions on how to fix 'em?

thanks again!

I don't think the disk utility will work. As I recall there are specific instructions in the manual or wiki for converting. That or you need windows iTunes.

I actually answered pretty much the same question years ago in this very thread. When resurrecting an old thread please read it completely, not only parts. I did state that reformatting is not the proper way to convert an Ipod. That is exactly the problem that was discussed earlier (i.e. on the previous page) and is also exactly the problem you're facing.

Doing so will indeed reformat the disc to my renamed (ROCKBOX) FAT formatted iPod. Now the rock box utility will autodetect it, but will NOT autodect the mountpoint and will not give me an option to manually insert the mountpoint.

This is not sufficient. OS X uses a different partition table format, and you need to change that format as well. The easiest way would be to get access to a Windows machine with Itunes installed. There's a description on how to do this without Itunes in the wiki: http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/IpodConversionToFAT32

Quote
Now when I go back in to iTunes to enable the disc, iTunes recognizes the iPod only as a "Recovering iPod" and gives me the option to restore (to MAC format which is useless for Rockbox).

Which is not surprising. You didn't convert the Ipod to a Winpod, you merely reformatted its data partition. These are two completely different things (even if converting to a Winpod includes reformatting the data partition). Your Ipod is now in a state that neither Itunes nor Rockbox likes. Basically the system on the Ipod is now broken (though it's easy to fix this).

Any clues would be appreciated.

Do a full conversion.

i did this from the root in terminal but got this crazy hang up.  i read the thread.  i'm sorry if i made you mad.  i'll try it again.  once again, i'm sorry if i made you mad.

Ah well if you already know that you need to follow those instructions, you should mention that and ask for help if needed.  Otherwise its just me wasting your time guessing whats wrong.

Ok, then explain what you did.  There is no point in asking for help if you don't explain the problem you ran into...

ok.  so i followed the steps in http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/IpodConversionToFAT32 to a T and once i was finished received an error "permission denied".

And?

Anyway, those logs are so long that they're cut off by the maximum post length.  I don't think they're useful here anyway, but if you needed to post one, try pastebin so that people can actually read the whole thing.

ah.  yeah.  good call.  will need to learn how/what pastebin is.  basically i follow those steps and i get one of two errors: "cannot find/possibly not an ipod" or "ipod not found".  i'm doing everything from cmd line.  it's fairly simple, but i must be doing SOMETHING wrong i just dont know what?!?!?

EDIT: PASTEBIN IS EASY! http://pastebin.com/MyNpSb3e
