Please explain new playlist behaviour.
« on: January 10, 2012, 03:01:08 PM »
Hello Rockbox community,

I know that the playlist behaviour has changed some time ago. I read the manuals and all the related forum posts, but 2 questions still remain:

When I browse through the file browser and select tracks in order to create a new playlist, the playlist is saved in the directory is set as playlist directory (which is /Playlists on my clipv2) and is also accessible by using the Playlist catalog. When I want to save a current playlist and give it a name it is saved in the directory of the first file in that playlist and does not show up in the Playlist catalog in the main menu. When changing the location for saving my playlist to /Playlists using the virtual keyboard then of course it is there.

1.) Why is one playlist saved in the set Playlist directory by default and the other in a different (and maybe later hard to find) location and does not show up in the Playlist catalog?

When pressing select on a playlist in the Playlist catalog it is treated like a folder and I can browse it to select any song in the playlist to start playing, what is nice by the way.
But when I enter the Folder "Playlists" where I store all my playlists in and that are accessible using the Playlist catalog, a press on select starts playling the playlist immediately .

2.) Why are playlist treated differently depending on how you approach them?

I am looking forward to your explanations.

Greetings

1) If the name doesn't include /playlists, why would you expect it to be saved in the playlists folder? This would make it extremely difficult to save them anywhere else.

2) The file browser is a file browser. The playlist catalog is not a file browser, it's a special utility. It's not just a matter of approaching. You wouldn't ask, for example, "why does pressing select on a file in the file delete utility delete it, but pressing select on it in the file browser just runs it" (if Rockbox had a file delete utility, that is). Both work in different ways. The file browser functionality was put back to the way it's been for many, many years so that people with file browser based habits don't have extra complication in launching their music, while the playlist catalog functionality was updated with that new feature to allow some expanded functionality.

Hello Llorean,

thanks for your reply.

1) When using the virtual keyboard for saving a current playlist, I see that the path to where the playlist is going to be saved does not start with /Playlists but with the directory where the first file of the playlist resides, so I don't expect this playlist to be saved in /Playlists.

I don't mind having *.m3u8 files all-around, but it is not easy to remember the location of all of my playlists I ever created, but would like it much if the Playlist catalog would show them all. The manual lacks of information, that playlists are by default stored differently, depending on how you created them. See: http://download.rockbox.org/daily/manual/rockbox-sansaclipv2/rockbox-buildch4.html#x7-760004.4.5

My intention of this post was asking for reasons (technical, individual preferences of developers...) for this behaviour and trying to understand it.

For now, if I want to save a current playlist, I manually change the path to /Playlists to easily access them with the Catalog.

2) Your example makes sense. I understand now.

Greetings,
