USB working on Sansa AMSv2
« on: January 04, 2012, 08:31:16 PM »
I installed today's build as I read that USB had been enabled for the Clip+.

It works as advertised - no more synching and rebooting after transferring files.

For some reason it took three attempts before Windows 7 64-bit installed the drivers and recognised the Clip+, but now it works fine.

Post Merge: January 05, 2012, 04:41:49 AM
I just tried it in Windows XP and it worked perfectly there too.

It's a pity the original firmware starts when I plug in my Clip+ when it is switched off.

Anyway, great work devs.

  :D

This because you have not installed a bootloader/of merged with the latest mkamsboot available from svn.

OK thanks. I used the Rockbox Utility to update to the current build, but I didn't think to replace the bootloader.

You can update the bootloader with the Rockbox Utility, but the current release will not fix your problem since it does not yet include the updated mkamsboot.

You can use an svn binary of Rockbox Utility. See my signature for a link (just uploaded new binaries today).

Thanks bluebrother, I used it with no problems. I just plugged in my switched-off Clip+ and Rockbox started.  8)

I suppose now you can remove the requirement for the original firmware?

You don't need to use the OF for USB, but its always physically present on the device.

That's my point. Why have the OF if you are not going to use it? The Rockbox Utility demands an OF and now I do not think it is necessary.

Why have the OF if you are not going to use it?

Because we need it to install rockbox.

If you know better, feel free to post code for an install method that eliminates such unnecessary steps.

The OF is required for building the bootloader, not because it is assumed that you might need the OF at some stage.
Removing it would be way more work than it's worth. The OF resides somewhere other than the flash memory, so you wouldn't even gain the space which it takes up.
Besides, you don't have to install the bootloader that often, do you?

Thanks for the explanation.

I'm very, very happy with Rockbox and all the good work you do.

I have installed Rockbox on my Fuze v2 via the Utility 1.2.12, but it is not being recognized when i connect it to my PC w Win7. Starting Rockbox before connecting didn't help, too?

Shouldn't it show up now as a drive (in explorer) just as if booted to OF, or am i missing something?

You probably installed 3.10 rather then the current build. No USB back when 3.10 was released.

oh i see. then i got something wrong, i thought the utility loads the latest build itself.

i want to use the utility for updating in the future and read somewhere that it does not handle manually copied files.

so to prevent any confusion, shall i just manually copy the current build over the existing folder on my fuze - or do i have to wait for the final release of 3.11 and finally (have a clean) update via the utility?

You can update to a current build with Rockbox Utility just fine.
