Clip Zip microSD compatibility
« on: December 26, 2011, 10:25:59 AM »
I'm not entirely sure this is a hardware issue, in fact I'm hoping it isn't, so sorry if this is in the wrong place.

I've tried using a 32GB Samsung Class 10 microSD with my Sansa firmware Clip Zip and its flakey at best.  Most of the time it reads the card and gives the correct capacity but doesn't show any files on it.

I realise the rockbox firmware for the Clip Zip is still a working progress but should I be waiting with baited breath in the hopes it improves compatibility with this card?

The SD card driver used for the clip zip in rockbox is exactly the same as the SD card driver for the clip+. This driver got a nice set of cleanup and compatibility fixes this year. So, despite the young age of the clip zip port, the sd card driver it uses is already quite mature.

I'm so grateful for both your response and the work you've put in on the rockbox firmware.  It looks like I'm going to get some good usage out of my Christmas present after all.

In my case with the same setup (zip + 32gb samsung) i have a couple of issues.

the player barely starts when the microsd is inserted. i usually plug it out, start the player, and plug it back in.

but even the creation of the database takes so long that i'm wondering whether it's actually stuck.

is there any option to improve the handling of the microSD-card?

I've just noticed this thread.

I can confirm that my Clip+ works fine with a SanDisk 32GB class 4 microSD card. So if, as bertrik says, the Clip Zip's SD card handling is the same as that of the Clip+, perhaps trying a SanDisk card might help?

<conspiracy theory>
Is it remotely possible that the Clip's SD slot is optimised in some way for SanDisk cards?  >:(
</conspiracy theory>

I think I've seen this too, rockbox then seems to hang being busy with the sd card, with no indication of what exactly it is doing (e.g. not indicating a database commit or something like that). It seem to go away when the database has properly updated once.

I have this issue with Clip+ and Adata 32GB MicroSDHC
RB 3.10 git build
