Rockbox on a YH-820
« on: December 18, 2011, 06:49:09 AM »
can anyone help me please I had formatted my samsung YH-820 mp3 player in windows XP. but now I want to rebuild it again the recovery utility program which came with it says no device connected but it is. as I see the drive letter and can access the player. but if I add songs manually then boot all I get on screen is connect to PC and upgrade firmware. but how can I

so I am wondering if someone here can do me step to step instructions on how to put Rockbox on this player I tried the Automatic install but it wont download the rockbox bootloader

Sure, since your player is missing important system files. Rockbox Utility requires the player to be working, and if you formatted the hard drive (which is usually a bad idea!) the system files are missing. You need to restore the player first.

What filesystem have you formatted the player with?

I formatted the YH 820  on windows xp with FAT32 as it was the only option. I wished now I had backed up all the files. there is a recovery utility with the player but like I have said all it keeps saying is no device connected please connect the device and try again. but it is connected. as I can access it and see the drive letter the samsung bootloader says v2.10 if this helps I tried to put RockBox on it but it wont download the bootloader

Hope you can help me bluebrother  on getting this going. as I have tried loads of places on the net, but to no avail

Try to create the necessary folders manually and place the Rockbox bootloader on the player as described in http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/SamsungYH92xPort#Installation. Then install a Rockbox build.

Hi bluebrother thks for replying, but do you mean place rockbox folders on the samsung YH 820 like this below also where is the samsung bootloader then as it only says
Quote
PP5020.mi4 for the YH920, and FW_YH925.mi4 for the YH925).

Hi again update to this PM I have renamed the rockbox.mi4  file in the rockbox-samsungyh820.zip dir to FW_YH820.mi4 made a folder called system placed the renamed rockbox.mi4 file as FW_YH820.mi4 to that folder. now it boots into rockbox menu, but something is not right as it says installation incomplete, no rockbox directory

I don't understand your question. What is the screenshot showing? The wiki tells you in which folder on the player to put the bootloader file. Create the missing folders and place the bootloader file at that location. Then install a Rockbox build as described in the manual installation instructions.

Well, the installation instructions tell you where to put the bootloader file. The folder is missing, so as a start you can create it and place the bootloader file. See if it works. Is that really that hard?

This is wrong. You place the bootloader file in the system folder, not files from the rockbox zip archive.

I made a folder on the YH820 called system  renamed the .mi4 file in this rockbox  http://build.rockbox.org/  to FW_YH820.mi4  placed it in system folder then extracted contents of zip which it said here
Quote
Get the Rockbox build from here: http://build.rockbox.org/ (Samsung YH92* only as of now) or compile Rockbox from SVN on your own. Then extract rockbox.zip on the Samsung.

so where am I going wrong this is very hard to understand for me as never done it before

Where have I said I did the above I have not placed rockbok files in system folder the only thing in sys F is the firmware which I said above

Ok Update to bluebrother

I've already told you where to get the original firmware file. Download it. Create the missing System folder. Place the firmware file in that folder and give it the proper name (you already figured that when renaming the Rockbox firmware file). You should be done by then.

I have made a folder on the YH-820 called system placed that samsung firmware into it. also unpacked the file  here

The URL you posted contains links to all players we provide binaries for. Therefore I'm not able to see which one you used.

I don't know since I don't fully understand what exactly you did. I really suggest writing proper sentences and using punctuation, as otherwise it's rather hard to understand it. I'm not willing to spend too much time trying to decrypt your messages much longer. Punctuation is something that even works fine for automatic translations.

No. You put a Rockbox file into System.

Rockbox comes in two parts (btw, this is described in the manual): the bootloader and the main binary. The bootloader is (for your player) a single file using the extension mi4. The main Rockbox binary is a folder named .rockbox that does contain various other files and folders. It does ALSO contain a file using the extension mi4. This is a fundamentally different file to the bootloader, and that file requires the other files in the archive as well.

I really don't understand this. Which file *exactly* did you unpack? What is the thing about the recovery utility you're talking about? Why do you get something with this recovery utility when starting up the player? That tool runs on the PC, and starting the player doesn't involve the PC at all.

Since I don't have that exact player I can't give you exact instruction. Judging from a different player (that also uses the mi4 file format) it should work like this:
1. Download http://build.rockbox.org/data/rockbox-samsungyh820.zip
2. Create a folder called "System" on the player. If your player has drive letter F: in Windows, this will give you a folder F:\System
3. Open the downloaded zip file. Copy the folder .rockbox from the zip file to the player. This will give you a folder F:\.rockbox
4. Change into the folder .rockbox and copy the file rockbox.mi4 to the System folder. You'll now get a file F:\System\rockbox.mi4
5. Rename F:\System\rockbox.mi4 to FW_YH820.mi4. You'll get a file F:\System\FW_YH820.mi4.
6. Safely eject the player from Windows (this is important!). The player should now reboot, if not shut it down and power it up again.

This will install Rockbox without the bootloader since there is no bootloader binary available on the download server. This should work fine though, but you loose the functionality to boot the original firmware.

Alternatively, you can also go back to the original firmware. In that case skip steps 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6. Instead copy the original firmware file you can download off the Samsung website to the System folder and name it FW_YH820.mi4
3.

This is now what I have on the samsung the firmware what you sent me which is in a folder called system, then I unpacked this

http://build.rockbox.org/data/rockbox-samsungyh820.zip

also to the samsung so in all on the samsung I have 2 folders, 1 called system folder which has the firmware you sent me. and a folder called .rockbox  is this right now. which I extracted to the samsung from the above link.

I get to the volume bar but you cant move it up or down, seems to freeze up.
