playback problems with toshiba mk2431gah 240gb on iRiver H-140
« on: December 20, 2011, 07:32:46 PM »
I succeeded, after a lot of glitches, in installing a toshiba mk2431gah 240gb on my iRiver H-140
rockbox now starts, recognizes the drive and starts playing a music file --
lossless .ape in this case
I have played ape files before on an 80 gig drive w/o problems; now the player is reading the hd every few seconds and pauses every other second as it does so
haven't seen anything about this problem in researching this and as it doesn't seem to be a common problem have no idea why, other than the size of the drive, it would do this
but as others have had no problems using the 240 gig drive I don't have a clue as to the cause or the solution

can't get onto a computer all the time, but any suggestions appreciated

and of course I have flashed the 7pre4, etc. etc otherwise I don't imagine it would be working at all

 ???

further testing. ogg vorbis files play okay and flac, so it must be a combination of the drive and the degree of compression, I'm guessing

any way around that?

I would rather not have to recode thousands of .ape files into .flac

The pausing issues are being caused by having a very high compression rate on your APE files.

What compression level are your APE files at? As far as I know, the H100 series can decode up to -c3000 compression without issues.

If you can either re-compress your APE files so that they're at -c3000 or lower, or even transcode to a lossy format or FLAC (which decodes far faster), then your iriver will not have issues with pauses or stutter.

it was extra high compression; but they had played on my 60 gig drive....

however I am more than 75% through with converting about 20,000 .ape files to .flac

I had hoped to avoid having to do this

I used .ape because it had the highest compression rate, but the difference is not THAT much  between .flac 8 which plays and .ape extra high
