Sound cuts out from time to time..
« on: January 02, 2005, 07:35:41 PM »
I use a Recorder V2 and the sound cuts out in one side of my headphones from time to time... If I adjust the headphone plug-in, the audio goes back to normal.

I have tried different headphones and all have this problem... So this would be a problem with the jack on the archos right... It couldn't be firmware or anything?  Is this a common problem... Fixable?

If you can temporarily fix the problem by holding pressure on the headphone connector and you have tried multiple headsets, it does sound like a broken solder joint at the headphone connector inside the recorder (not that uncommon).  The other possibiliity is some type of contaminant on the surface of the jack.  I doubt it would be this since it would have cleared up (or gotten better) after plugging and unplugging a number of times.

If you are handy with a soldering iron (or are not afraid to learn) you can open the case and re-heat the solder connections that hold the jack to the printed circuit board.
The following DISASSEMBLY link is for a Archos MM but it is the closest I can find to a V2 Recorder.

I don't think you will have to go much further than removing the battery cover and front panel to get to the jack solder joints.  The solder connections appear to go through the board so you should be able to get to them from the top side.  Here is a closeup of the jacks and where they are soldered to the board:

Good Luck!

Thanks a lot Steve!  I figured something with the jack was the problem and that it could be remedied by iopening up my Archos and working on it...  I have soldering experience in modding my XBox and PS2 so I'll go ahead and do this.

Woo hoo!  Hooray for the forum search feature.

I too was having this problem.  I just opened up my Recorder V1 and lo and behold it was obvious that one solder joint was bad.  I tested with my multimeter to verify that the joint was associated with the headphone jack, then soldered the joint to make it look better.  Now it's happy (and I'm happy too)!

I love being able to fix things on my Archos when they go wrong.  I previously had to replace the DC charging jack and I had upgraded the hard drive before that...
