Tested Clip+v1 versions are : 01.02.09, 01.02.13, 01.02.15, 01.02.16"! This is especially frustrating as my version is explicitly listed as an OK alternative in the error message!

You need to point Rockbox Utility to the firmware file, not the Sansa Updater -- the Sansa Updater is useless. Sandisk provides both, just search their forums carefully. And obviously extracting the firmware version out of a file that isn't a firmware file will give interesting results. Furthermore, the version of the firmware that is currently installed on your player doesn't make a difference -- the version of the file you downloaded is important.

--- Quote ---More generally (sorry if this is naive, but the instructions are not crystal-clear), my assumption is that the overall process is as follows ...
1) copy the .bin file from my player to my computer
2) run the RockBox Utility to amend the local .bin file
3) copy the amended .bin file back to the player.

--- End quote ---

1) you shouldn't have the firmware file on the player. If it's on the player it will update its firmware and the file be gone.
2) you can do that ...
3) useless, since Rockbox Utility copies the patched file to the correct location on the player. Obviously this requires the configuration to be correct, if you select a wrong drive the firmware file will end up in the wrong place (after all it's a file, so storing it on like a fixed disk doesn't do any harm -- but it also doesn't give the intended effect).

Thanks for responses so far. Have figured out that I had misunderstood the instructions. Now succeeded in loading RockBox.

REASON for changing to RockBox is inability to download playlists from music player to share on say, my Sonos streaming system ... hope RockBox allows this ...

Biggest problem so far is Windows not recognising RockBoxed Clip+ as a USB device. Only way to do this seems to be to use dual-boot facility to boot original o/s. Is this just the way it has to be?!
