Check the UsingSVN page on the wiki.  It will tell you how to get the source.

Hmm, no experience with svn so I might have to give this one a miss. Looks like I'll have to just hope somebody else can solve this one in the future!  :(

I didn't have any experience with subversion before consulting that page either.  I found it (and the rest of the instructions on setting up a development environment and building rockbox) to be pretty clear.  If you have any specific questions feel free to ask.  :)

It might also be helpful to see if the current build behaves differently from 3.9.1.

You might want to follow this tracker task: FS#12135 - IAP large packet support

There has been some progress in expanding the accessory protocol.  If you get a build environment set up, you may be able to use one of the patches in that task to improve the connectivity with your system.
