Date randomly sets to 2008 on 1G Nano
« on: October 03, 2011, 12:58:35 PM »
The date on my 1G Nano randomly sets itself to 2008.  Does anyone else see this?  Is this a known Bug?  I could not find it in Fly Spray.

Thanks.

Are you sure it's random and not only when you access the Apple Diagnostics mode? I only own a 2G Nano, but was seeing the date get set to 2006 repetitively, and it took me a while to understand it only happened when I put the iPod into diagnostics mode.

It can't be that, since I don't know how to enter Apple Diagnostic mode!  I do a lot of recording, and every once in a while the file that is created has an unexpected name.  I eventually realized that the system date was changed to 2008, and the file name is created from the date and time.

I have been trying to figure out if it is some series of actions on my part, but it seems to happen at random times.  Some times it changes within a day of my resetting the date and some times it goes for several weeks.

I know that is not helpful to someone who is trying to duplicate the problem, and I will keep trying to "make" it happen through some confirmable series of actions.  In the mean time, I was wondering if this problem is known, or if anyone else has noticed it.

The RTC chip might be malfunctioning, or else it looses the power somehow... I suppose the iPod battery is working correctly and can hold a charge?..

Yes, the battery charges and runs fine.  The month and day are fine, also the time is fine.  Only the year changes.

Only the year changes... perhaps it's an unreported Rockbox bug, but I think that if such problem occurred on more 1st gen Nanos, we would get more people complaining...

Try to bring the subject to the IRC channel if you haven't done so, or if you're confident it's a Rockbox problem go ahead and file a Flyspray bug report.

I'm not sure how many 1G Nano users are out there.  If so, please speak up!  In the mean time, I will try to replicate the problem.  Thanks for the info.

I am still trying to duplicate this problem at will.  There are several things I have found:

1)  The year changes when the Nano is powered off, then on
2)  The year always changes to 2008
3)  ONLY the year changes...not the month, not the day, AND, not the day of the week!  So, it is actually showing an invalid date! For example, for today it would show "Wed 01/18/08" even though that should be a Friday.

Does this sound like a failure of my hardware, or could it be a bug?

Thanks.

I'd say it is a failure of the RTC... I'm no expert in any way though.
