Rockbox as an Application for iOS devices
« on: October 03, 2011, 11:29:21 AM »
I made this because the rockbox smartphone forum is a general thread full of Android developer info . This thread is about Iphone port and creating of an IPA distro . How far is progress right now?

Nobody is interested in doing an iphone port, so it hasn't started.

Seeing as how Rockbox can now be built as a standalone app, anyone who wishes to create an Xcode project and build it into an iOS app is free to do so.

I wanted to undertake this endeavor myself, both as a test to work with the Xcode environment and see if I could build iOS apps, but as I am not a very active developer, nor do I have an iOS device of my own, this has become rather difficult for me.

If the Rockbox fund would like to provide me with some money to help me purchase an iOS device (an iPod Touch would work perfectly for this task), I would gladly do it, but not because of a request. I would do it because it's what I wanted to do!

(NINJA EDIT) I also changed the name of this thread, since iOS is not just on iPhones.

Great idea , i have an Iphone 2g you should make a Donate Button .
But lets inform people curious about porting rockbox from android to IOS.

For People with IOS Devices :
A good tool to do a fast install of your IPA on jailbroken iphone/touch/Ipad is : http://www.i-funbox.com/
Iphone IPA files are just renamed zips so it should be fairly easy to add them.
Since its an app you dont risk bricking the device so it would take some trial and error to get things right.
Do we have rockbox devs that own iphones?

Another interesting thing would be access all files on your idevice and make it appear as a USB-Drive when connected.

Generally ports are done by people who own the devices, not so much core rockbox developers.  We have the code in SVN to compile rockbox as an application on another operating system (including OSX).  At this point its up to people like you to start writing the code to make it work well with iOS and then submit patches back to us.

I've already begun a VERY preliminary iOS project in Xcode 4 for Rockbox, but it so far doesn't build anything at all. This is only to lay out the very basic files required for support.

The project builds universally, meaning that it'll work on iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad.

It's going to take a lot of work to really get anything out of this, and I'm just basically running along and following whatever the Android port does already, but tailored to work with iOS. As my skills in iOS development are basically nil at this point, this isn't an easy task, but I'm going to try at it. I'll have a Github repo up soon-ish.

And that can only run up to iOS 3.1.3. Xcode 4 has ditched support for all iOS versions below 4.
