clip+ crashes after splash screen (r30589??)

using 30593, i see a brief flash of the splash screen and then the screen goes black. no response at all from the buttons and i have to do a long power off to reset it. my first thought it might be my custom build, cfg file, custom wps or custom tagnavi. but i removed them all and used a virgin .rockbox folder and i get the same result!!

looking at today's changes, everything from 30589 onward seem related to each other so i built my own 30588 and that's absolutely fine.
