AJBR HD or Batt problem?
« on: December 31, 2004, 08:06:44 AM »
Hi guys, I have a serious problem with my Archos Jukebox Recorder 20, It won't start the usual rockbox firmware and can't acces it with my PC anymore too.

When I press the 'ON' button,
First I get the 'Rockbox' screen (version: CVS-041126) for a long time,

then it says:    ATA error: -1
      Press ON to debug

I press 'ON'
Then the screen shows me:
      PADR: A27D
      PBDR: BDBF
      AN0: 3FF      AN4: 001-002
      AN1: 3FF      AN5: 000-001
      AN2: 001-002   AN6: 303-301-302-304
      AN4: 00A-00B-00C   AN7: 003
      Batt: 4.99-5.00V  -1%
      ATA: master, 0x200

I press 'OFF' one time,
Then the screen shows me:
      *PANIC*
      ata:  -1

I've read a few topics with similar problems and came to the conclusion it's propably a battery or HD related problem.
I've opened my JBR to look at the soldering joints but everything seems well connected. The 'repairbattery' tutorial (http://www.rockbox.org/docs/repairbattery.html) says me to 'Make sure that the PCB really is connected to the metal housing.', What is the PCB?? and where should it be connected??
When I power on the AJBR I don't hear the drive spinning, I just hear a 'ticking'kinda sound all the time. Can't the drive spin up because it's broken or because of lack of power?
Before I had this problem I let a friend use my AJBR (maybe not that smart :)), he said he couldn't use it to and he had taken out the batteries to check them (maybe in a not that carefull way). If anybody could help, please do, I really like my Archos and I really like Rockbox.
Thanks in advance.

When I power up pressing F1 It has to load a very long time and then says:
      Read acces error!
      Can't read from hard
      drive

When I connect it to my PC, I hear the 'connected sound' in Win XP, but the jukebox doesn't show up in the explorer. The screen of the recorder just shows the same as when not connected.

The PCB is the circuit board. Your description fits pretty well with the battery/hard drive grounding problem on the "repairbattery" page. Find a friend with a clue about electronics and have him repair it for you.

Before you do, try with another set of batteries.

Thanks for giving response so quickly, LinusN,
I 've tried another set of batteries, but no luck.
Are it only the two solder joints cirkled in the 'repairbattery' tutorial (http://www.rockbox.org/docs/repairbattery.html) that could cause this trouble? Because these really look fine to me.
Is there any way I could check the solder joints?

Not necessarily. Any solder joint that connects power or ground can be the source of the error.

Use some gentle force and try to bend them apart. Also use a multimeter to test the connection.
