Completely unresponsive Clip+

Hi Guys,

I'm really hoping someone can give me some advise as I seem to be all out of luck.

A few days ago my Rockboxed Clip+ started giving error messages as I was copying files onto it, even though there was plenty of space remaining on the player to take them. Usually this would result in the progress bar freezing and eventually Windows Explorer literally giving me the (Not Responding). I would remove the clip+ at this point (safely, once explorer restarted) and it would then freeze during the OF's "Refreshing database.." screen. I'd hold the button down for a few seconds and it would power off.

I knew I had to format the player, but I've had a busy week and no time set aside for the project.

Fast forward to today, when I was finally going to do it, I boot my player as I'm walking from the train to my house and the clip+ freezes on the rockbox bootscreen. I hold the power button down again for a few seconds and it switches off, only not to come on again.

When I finally arrived home I plugged it into my laptop (via the main usb port for full power), windows instantly tells me I need to format the drive, I click yes, but it fails. I retry plugging it in, but over and over, "the usb device is not recognized".

After some reading I decided to try the manual unbricking technique described on the rockbox.org. This did nothing, however as I was putting it back together, rockbox unexpectedly and suddenly booted as normal (I don't recall touching the power button). I shut it down and connect to my computer and start a format. Halfway through the formatting though, the program, CCleaner, reports an error. I disconnected, I try booting the player and nothing happens. I try reconnecting it to the laptop, nothing happened apart from the occasional request to format the drive (which doesn't work) or USB Device not recognized.

I've tried booting into OF (left and on) and nothing has worked. I'm at the end of my tether and would appreciate any advise. Sorry for the long post, I didn't want to leave out any details.

Check the disk for errors and format the disk, all using Windows' (or Linux's) own tools. Don't use CCleaner, at least for better debugging. When formatting using Windows, do not choose "Quick Format".

If it doesn't boot after formatting, you can then try the manual brick recovery.

Ok, I will not use CCleaner if I can ever get windows (or linux) to recognise it again. At the moment the clip+ screen remains blank when I plug it in via USB (ie. no OF booting) and a Windows pop-up reads

It then recommends reconnecting the device again.

I really think I need to go ahead and edit the Sansa Unbricking page to make sure that people don't come across it, like this, and assume that that's the next logical step they should go to.
In almost every case, it isn't.
Its a last resort.

There's a very real chance of you *actually* bricking your player bumbling around in there not knowing what you're doing.
(Where were you planning on getting a dump of the firmware partition from a working device from, anyway? You would have needed this if you did actually brick your player, be it fault of your own or not....a patched OF is enough to get Rockbox to boot, but (IIUC) the OF requires additional magic to boot which won't be present if you trash the firmware partition. You can only get this by DD'ing the contents of a working devices FW partition)

If you can boot into the OF, let the player format itself with its own tools, you can format the player from the Settings menu in the OF.
