Behavioural/general suggestions for Rockbox
« on: August 28, 2011, 12:25:29 PM »
I've been really into Rockbox lately and came up with some suggestions, and now I'm posting some of them here for further discussion.

The first one is a slightly different behavior for the file/playlist selection:
  • Select plays the song without leaving the file menu and right plays the song in the WPS
  • When the selected song is already playing, going to the WPS without restarting the song
  • After the dynamic playlist ends, it would then go to the first item of the playlist, stopped (currently the playlist is cleared and "Nothing to resume" is displayed)
  • Automatically unpause when a different song is selected

Regarding the Rockbox EQ:
  • Placing Equalizer as the last item in Sound Settings menu, so you can simply press up to reach it (it takes quite a few clicks right now)
  • Scrolling through frequencies is really fast and easy in the advanced/menu-based equalizer, the same acceleration should be applied to the graphical version (it's really slow at the moment)
  • Home to leave the EQ
  • Volume buttons enabled
  • In the Clip Plus, there's a color shift in the EQ (I believe displaying the status bar would solve this, since there's an empty line in the lower part of the screen, or just shifting the whole thing a few pixels down)
  • Temporarily bypass a band while holding select (?)

And some other general suggestions:
  • Having the cursor just before the extension would make it easier to rename files and name EQ settings
  • Backlight always turned on at the stopwatch plugin
  • Being that volume has no effect on the actual recording, maybe it should be displayed in the status screen whenever it's changed
  • Some way to discard the current recording, maybe (or is there? Long home?)
  • In the text editor plugin, when editing a line, long select saves, but when all the lines are being displayed, long select erases (maybe replacing it by long home, but there's an erase in the home menu already)

I really hope this helps!

Edit: Forgot to mention, the player I own is a Sansa Clip Plus

Most of the EQ stuff seems ok to me, so if you want to update the keymap for the Clip+ and post a patch I could probably commit it.

while we do have a feature ideas forum we dont officially do anything with them. That means it still takes someone to find your idea and want to do the work (do the code and get it commited).

So:
re the first bullet point, that has been suggested a few times but is very unlikely to happen. It needs someone with a very thick skin to get any actual UI changes done and not every target could even do this which makes it harder.
going to the wps if selecting the current track is an interesting one, probably also wont happen because someone will argue it would be a surprise to users. (I don't necessarily agree here but I've had enough UI arguments to know exactly who will aergue what)
end of dynamic playlist, *what* goes to the first track? the WPS? the WPS cant be open with a stopped playlist.

automatic unpause is also an annoyance but ditto to the above arguments.

(Can you tell I'm sick of trying to get UI changes agreed on?)

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.

Yeah, you're right, someone would probably complain. The problem as I see it is that Right and Select always have the same mapping. Having different mappings for the file/playlist/database menus would make things a little more intuitive.

About the third bullet, it would behave exactly as it does now, but "Resume playback" would restart the playlist, it shouldn't really affect anyone.

there was an attempted fix of this in the last week or two but was reverted because it broke other things :)
