The alternate way that doesn't require compiling is to use files stripped of AA and make sure no AA images exist in the music directory. At least that way it fails to locate any which would at least be faster than decoding the images.

That's a good idea. If I suspected an album art problem, I would first try that, even though I could easily recompile. When dircache is enabled, unsuccessful attempts to locate album art should take virtually no time.

In the past, right after album art resizing was added, I've had large delays on my 5G iPod when starting albums with very large album art images. I didn't think of it as a Rockbox problem; I just felt I was trying to use unreasonably large album art, and I resized it.

I have a few Vorbis tracks with embedded album art. On my iPod Video, it typically takes a good 5 to 8 seconds to start playback. On my Sansa c250, playback starts almost immediately (<1 second).

Just my two cents.

I am still having this problem. It hasn't magically gone away since I raised the issue. It is almost useless as a "shuffle" type player now which is how I tend to use it. I would return to the OF but my ears are very sensitive to certain things and it is uncomfortable for me to listen to headphones without crossfeed much of the time.

I don't even understand how I'm meant to use those test files. The issue is when skipping in the database too - if they have no database entries, I can't recreate the issue either way.

Put them on the player, and then use them in the same way you're using the files currently on the device.  Take note of whether or not they work correctly.

But give that you said you had crashes before, its probably a good idea to reformat the file system first (see my post above about that).

Yes, the same issue happens. Not as much since i Only have three tracks so I can't do the megaskipping I normally do, but it's still there.

This is with reformatting?

If so I think you're probably out of luck.  Might be a busted player or something similar.

No, I'm not reformatting unless I absolutely have to given the nightmare of putting all the music I have on it in the first place.

The skipping works fine with the OF. It's not the player. It's Rockbox.

One thing I note when using the original firmware is that the track doesn't continue to play after I click "next" whereas it does with Rockbox. Maybe this is part of the issue.

I still had this issue with my Clip+ too, it just wasn't as bad.

Well if you're got better ideas, feel free to try them and let me know what the problem was :)

The OF works differently then rockbox, so that doesn't mean much.  If I try skipping in shuffle mode on my Fuze V1 running 3.9.1. it happens with a tiny fraction of a second delay.  So its clearly something about your player or files.  You're going to have to try things until you figure out whats wrong with your device.

Okay, read this.

http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=28564.0

Great, someone could have told me earlier... I imagine this isn't going to be fixed.

It's not just "less convenient" for people who skip a lot, it's near useless. When I'm on random there are usually only a few tracks I really want to listen to. Generally this isn't a problem with an mp3 player as I just keep skipping to get to a track I like. What's worse is that this can even cause lockups.

Your Fuze doesn't have a hard disk, so you don't have to wait for it to spin up like the ipod video ;)

Blargh.

I have no idea what it is then.

I'm going to try a reformat. What options should I choose when formatting? FAT32 etc.

The "safe" way is to let the player format the disk itself...it knows what it wants and how, and there's no risk of user failure here.
The OF has an option to restore the device iirc.

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.

Alright. Reformatted both discs, reinstalled.

Problem definitely not as bad as before, but still notable lag when skipping many tracks(same as the Clip+).
