H10 5GB, regular noises on a recording
« on: August 21, 2011, 09:30:06 AM »
Hello. I plan making some huge field recordings and this night I've tested battery life of H10 on constant recording.

And I have found on this recording some regular, weird noises. Here's the mp3 cut:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4328095/misc/R_MIC_110820-220916.mp3

They occur every 4-5 minutes FROM THE START. What's wrong with my player?

I recorded today also half an hour of my daily activites and found the same noises...

I have done some recordings in the past (10-20 minutes each) and I didn't find this type of noises. The last one was two days ago when I recorded thunderstorms and everything was fine. I always use +20 dB. The player is only sometimes making this high freq tone but it disappears when I move the player or slightly hit it :)

BTW if that interests someone. From 94% battery to the player turning off, I've captured 8h 36 min on wavpack, but I think if there will be more action (this was a silent night) the encoder will more overload the player resulting in a shorter runtime.

The internal memory probably fills up every 4-5 minutes, so i'm guessing that would be the hard drive spinning up.

So if it's hard drive spinning up, why on FM Radio recordings this never occured? Today I recorded a talk with my friend for a project and this occured so I guess it would be "hearable" on radio recordings which I've done dozens in the past and listened to them all. I just say what I know.

Obvious answer:  it only happens when recording through the microphone?

As in, there's no microphone listening for mechanical noises when radio recording, but when recording with a mic the mechanical noise of the drive spinning can be picked up, sometimes very easily through vibrations of the player.
