Anti-skip Buffer, iPod 160GB (2007 model)
« on: August 18, 2011, 11:17:30 PM »
Hi All,

I am running Rockbox on an iPod 160GB (the 2007 model) using the Emcore firmware. It has been a pleasure thus far, but I was hoping to up the anti-skip buffer (sometimes the music stops for a second or two and then resumes, I am assuming this is because I am listening to large flac files of rather extended free jazz pieces).

In the build offered up for download on the Emcore website I cannot seem to find the place to do this in the Playback settings section. Does anyone know where it is on this particular build?

Typically if you're using builds provided by other people, you need to direct any questions about them to those people. We aren't in control of any potential modifications or other issues.

The anti-skip buffer setting should never need increasing except if something is causing the disk to be accessed particularly slowly, such as the player being in a situation where it is shaken alot. It sounds like it's just another symptom of the port not being entirely ready yet.

Understood...I will see what I can get on the Emcore site then...and thanks for the info on the anti-skip buffer...I guess I was hoping it would inadvertently help to alleviate what I thought might be drive searching delays.

If anyone out there sees this and knows anything, any help would be much appreciated. If I find out anything further I will be sure to pop back in and share.

Just a wee note, AFAIK the builds from the emCORE release page are taken "as they come" from the Rockbox build system from that moment in time.

Builds are made for the iPod Classic, they just aren't linked anywhere from here...You have to know where they are and go digging for them ;)

But yes, Llorean is correct in saying that Freemyipod is the place one *should* be going for support relating to the Classic until it is promoted to Unstable.

Additionally, fleasbaby, it is a very trivial operation even for one who is completely non-savvy in the realms of computing, to set up a development environment in either Linux or Windows and compile your own builds of Rockbox.
From there you'll be able to set the antiskip buffer to whatever you want it to be (within the physical limitations of the player, of course).

Thanks for the pointers :)...much appreciated. The Emcore help pages are a little limited and vague, but this is understandable given the instability of the release and its early stages of development...

I will definitely have a poke about on the Development pages...thank you kindly gents.

emCORE/Freemyipod help pages are the absolute last place I would go for support (ironic considering its probably the first place (after rockbox.org) "Average Joe" will stumble across when looking for help)...

The ideal place for iPod Classic/emCORE support is the Freemyipod support IRC channel (#freemyipod-support) on Freenode. If you don't have an IRC client on your PC, don't despair! There's a (reasonably nice...but not *great*) IRC web-client provided by Freenode themselves available here.

Simply go to the linked page, add a nickname, the channel(s) you want to connect to(#freemyipod-support), fill out the captcha and hit connect. Once you're there, you'll be wanting to talk (preferably) with a man by the name of Michael Sparmann whose IRC nickname is either "TheSeven" or "[7]" as he is the lead developer of both the emCORE project and the iPod Classic port.

Hope this helps.
