Accidentally formatted Sansa memory!
« on: August 12, 2011, 02:26:11 AM »
Hi.

I own a Sansa Fuze and have been using Rockbox, which I have found great. I run Ubuntu 10.10 as well.

So today I was trying to format a USB drive which just happens to be an 8gb Sansa USB stick. At the same time I had my Sansa Fuze connected to my PC and, guess what, I formatted the wrong thing!

All my music is backed up, so that is no problem.

When I connect it to my PC, it identifies it as a "Floppy Drive".

What do I need to do to fix it up? I assume that I need to put the sansa firmware on it first and then rockbox again?

Thx in advance

Assuming you formatted it as fat32 all you have to do is download a new .rockbox folder and unzip it to the player.

Okay I managed to work this out myself. For the benefit of anyone else out there who needs to know what to do, here are the steps:

1) Reformat via Sansa menu.

Like many who use Rockbox I was aware of the fact that a dual-boot is possible but never used it. Now is the time. What you do is keep the left click depressed while turning on the Fuse normally. The Sansa menu should appear. Go into settings. Somewhere there you can find the format command. Click on it and the memory will be reformatted. To be doubly sure, I then reset the factory settings after the format was complete.

2) Download latest Sansa Firmware.

Save it to the same folder of your hard drive as your rockbox installation program. This comes as a zip file. When you extract it it is a .bin file. Don't worry about trying to install it manually since the rockbox installer will do it for you.

3) Install Rockbox.

Ensure that you do "complete installation" which means that you install the bootloader as well. Once this is complete and you disconnect the Fuse, the Sansa menu sill say that a firmware upgrade is in progress. When this disappears from the screen it means that the Fuse has been turned off. Turn it back on again and you should have Rockbox back.

You don't need to do any of that. Instead just make sure the disk is fat32 and then extract a new rockbox build.

Once I formatted the Sansa memory, it would no longer be recognised by my PC as anything but a floppy drive. I tried reformatting the "floppy drive" but it was "read only".
