Changing Tracks takes too long after a while. Ipod Video.
« on: August 08, 2011, 09:57:38 AM »
I notice that listening to several tracks from different albums that track changing starts to slow down considerably.  It would take several seconds to change from one track to the next . Is there a setting that can prevent this from happening.. Ipod Video  RB 3.9 ....Thanks

How long are we talking?

Rockbox fills the entire RAM buffer with as many compressed audio files as it can out of your playlist, and will have to spin up the disk again if you skip past the end of what is in RAM.  This is likely the cause of the increase in skip time you are seeing.  Apple's firmware seems to pre-cache the start of many more files, including ones it has no way of storing in RAM in their entirety.  This does make for a more seemless user experience for the frequent track skipper, but wastes buffer and likely decreases battery life.

I would say at times about 8-10 secs...Doesn't happen all the time.Only when changing tracks frequently. Is there a setting i can use to help this issue?

No, there is not. We've chosen to buffer things in a way that improves battery life for those who listen without skipping a whole bunch (since doing that will hurt battery life even if we added a method to prebuffer a tiny bit of more songs, and that method would hurt battery life for those not skipping around a bunch).

It'll only happen if you skip tracks frequently, so the best plan is to put a little preparation into your playlists so you don't need to, or just have a little patience when it happens.

That said, the smaller the files you use (128kb/s MP3 vs 700kb/s FLAC) the less frequently this will happen and the faster Rockbox will start playing whenit does happen.

Thanks soap. I appreciate it. All my tracks are  mp3 192 VBR so thats probably has something to do with it as well.

As a possibly useful hint, if you're skipping a lot of tracks, then why not view the Playlist and remove the tracks or re-order them so that you don't have to skip as much.

Which is pretty much echoing what Llorean said but with a little extra info!
