Sansa clip+: parity error after installation

I've gone through the installation procedure on my Sansa Clip+ using the Utility under Kubuntu.   I've also tried using the manual method.  In either case, when I restart the device I get an immediate parity error and can get no further.  I even tried reformatting and then doing the installation, with no better results.  If I look at the filesystem as a device, everything seems OK.

Where do I go from here?

A CRC error? Those commonly occur if you install a build for the wrong device.

I'm pretty sure I got the image for the correct device.

I've tried reformatting yet again and reloading, this time with the cache disabled.  And this time Rockbox dame up.  At the moment there's no music loaded.  I want to see what happens if I load a whole lot of music files.
