xoran99:
I am trying to install rockbox on my iPod Video (Gen 5, not 5.5).
Here is my error message:

I have no idea why it isn't working -- I tried the automated tool as well, but no dice.
Post Merge: July 22, 2011, 03:44:56 AMOk, I managed to figure out what I was doing wrong. It is the classic example of not making the vfat filesystem so that Rockbox can see it. I had to use mtools (which is a pain, by the way), and I used the magic incantation
sudo mformat -t 2428 -h 255 -s 63 -S 4 -M 2048 -F a:
as described on the Wiki page for making the FAT32 partition without using Windows iTunes. After that, everything went smoothly.
Post Merge: July 22, 2011, 03:46:02 AMSo here's a question: Is there any development effort going into making Rockbox more tolerant of the other possible ways of vfat formatting? At first I was formatting with MacOS, and it seems that didn't work...
torne:
Does the original firmware, and the OF's disk mode, and the ROM emergency disk mode work when it's formatted that way? Does iTunes on Windows think the device is fine? (i.e. doesn't force a restore)
If so, then that probably should be an acceptable filesystem to Rockbox as well, even if it's not how iTunes does it. You would probably need to provide us with some way to reproduce this without requiring the use of a Mac, though (few developers use macs).
