As has been stated, it hasn't been rejected so much as it already exists as a feature. People just, perhaps, don't know what 'gain' means in an audio context.
The issue isn't a lacking feature, but a situation where documentation can be improved. Since it's open source, we welcome a patch for the manual from anyone who feels strongly about the issue to improve describing what precut is, and how it may be used for other purposes.
Yes, and perhaps in tribute to Apple's version of simplicity you guys could add some large numbered pictorials.
Just saying, I felt the need for this feature the other day after I loaned my player to a friend and he left it on an uncomfortably high volume setting. I read the manual, found this, and it only required a brief moment of thought and trial to see if it would be the solution to my problem.
I think people are confusing "simplicity" with having their laziness catered to, and on top of that not understanding that part of reading a manual is first understanding what is written, and then applying that to the context at hand. Given the way the manual is written, I'm not really sure how someone couldn't come to the conclusion that this is what the Precut does, unless they simply dismissed it on the grounds that the words "volume" and "limit" do not occur anywhere in the text. Once again, that just comes back to laziness, because in the context of everything I just don't see how a person could not understand what "gain" is.
As far as a "saftey" goes, I would like to see a "default volume". If I'm listening to someone that I need to turn the volume way up on, or maybe I loan my player to a friend that has a louder listening preference, I think it would be nice for the player to return to a "default volume" that the normal user considers comfortable or safe before the music resumes play. That way when it powers back up and whatever was playing is resumed, their ear drums aren't blasted with music that they either unintentionally left too high or their friends set too high. I usually have to adjust my volume anyway, so at least having it start out at a comfortable level would be nice... I'm actually in the habit of turning my volume way down the moment I start my player up because of that.
