Installing on ipod with issue

I just heard about rockbox a couple days ago from a co worker, he keeps saying how great this is.

Anyway, I have an ipod that's not working, got the sad face on it. I was wondering if I can install rockbox on this ipod, will it make it work like a music player again? Otherwise I have a $200 paperweight!
