60gb iPod Video 5g HDD doesn't work with Video 5g/5.5g logic board

Hello, I have a little hardware hiccup with two iPods of mine.

The first I have is a 60gb Video 5g that has worked flawlessly over the past years, up until a few weeks ago when one of the audio channels stopped working. I tried replacing the audio jack and hold switch cable, but that didn't fix it. I did not want to spend >$50 on a replacement 64mb logic board, so I just dealt with it until now.

Now I have a 30gb iPod Video (not sure if 5g or 5.5g) with a cracked screen that I got for dirt cheep off craigslist, and swapped my old iPod's lcd for the broken one. This new iPod has problems with its HDD. I can't get Windows to properly mount the drive. When it decides to mount, I get extremely slow transfer speeds (this is with both Apple and Rockbox 3.8.1 firmware), where the drive decides to park the heads randomly then start back up.

I've tried to use my old iPod's 60gb HDD but the 30gb Video gives me the restore ipod screen, and my computer hangs while it's connected through USB.

Any help?

To my understanding, there should be no reason why the device shouldn't accept the MK6008GAH.

Both are 40pin ZIF, neither disk has any large physical sector craziness to worry about (which is a thing of the past with Rockbox anyway and needn't be considered (the 5G and 5.5G iPod Video builds were consolidated some time ago)).

AFAIK the only thing that changes is the form factor of the disk (the MK6008GAH is 3mm thicker than the MK3008GAL), and the additional capacity. Neither of those things should cause a failure.

I have the same problem but with a 80GB HD from an iPod Video (G5.5) with a 30GB logic board (G5).
Connecting the iPod under Linux gives I/O errors and from checking the sector numbers involved I had the impression that the HD uses 4K sectors, but the logic board assumes 512 Byte sectors.
