I may need to do a TOTAL reinstall of Rockbox

I think I may have to totally reinstall rockbox due to some sort of corruption. I had some weird looking folders within my Rockbox after installing some themes (see other post).

I couldn't delete these folders when the unit was connected to a computer, but was able to delete them manually from within the player. However, after trying to delete about the 5th one, the player hung up. I had to remove the battery in order to turn it on/off. When I turned it back on, it gave me the initial Rockbox screen and proceeded to say "scanning". However, it would then go to an odd color screen (usually a yellowish) & essentially freeze up. Had to remove the battery to re-establish it.

Thinking Rockbox somehow got corrupt, I then used the rockbox utility to reinistall Rockbox only (not bootloader), but this didn't work either. Its still freezing up on me after the initial screen. So I am now wondering if I somehow deleted important folders even though they looked all jibberish.

If so, I'm thinking I need to do a TOTAL reinstall of Rockbox (bootlader & Rockbox). Can I just use the Rockbox utility to install it ALL on top of itself. Or should I maybe do a format (within Windows)? Or maybe be sure NOT to do a format of the unit (within Windows). Would totally uninstalling things with the Rockbox utility first be the better approach?

NOTE: I can still get into the old Sansa interface (hold down left arrow during power up) so the unit is not "bricked". I just can't get into the Rockbox firmware.

Did you check the filesystem for corruption and fixed the errors like suggested on the other thread? Try not to create multiple threads about the same subject.

Sorry. Thought since I wanted to ask about using the Rockbox utility, needed to post here. Anyway, turns out the file system was damaged. I ran a chkdsk on it. It came back reporting 2 errors. Then needed to do a "fix" by typing chkdsk g: f/ on the cmd prompt. This seemed to work as Rockbox loaded with no problems.

I may need to reinstall some (or all) of the themes as I can't get it to change the 'playing' screen with ANY other theme so I must of accidently deleted something. Can I simply use the Rockbox utility to uninstall and then reinstall all the themes again? Or will this not really fix this theme issue?

Probably Windows deleted some of the theme files while fixing the filesystem because those files were unrecoverable. You'd better re-installing Rockbox and the themes using Rockbox Utility just to make sure everything gets working properly.

OK, so even though it appears to be working correctly & loads with no problems, you think I should still go ahead and totally reinstall Rockbox?

 If so, can I simply use the Rockbox utility to install it on top of itself & it will simply add any necessary files/folders as needed? Or should I fully remove Rockbox and then install it again?

Well, if it fully works... my fear is that other files apart from the themes might also have been deleted, like plugins and codecs. I think you can't install on an installed system using the RB Utility, but you can download the latest build ZIP and extract it on the root of your player. It will preserve your settings and themes.

That's wrong. Rockbox Utility does simply extracting the zip file to the player for the main install (it does other things like writing a log file to be able removing things again, and bootloader installation and stuff. However, for main Rockbox it's that simple).
