The heuristic "add track number from track name" algorithm

(1/2) > >>

AMJF:
I've only just discovered Rockbox recently when I got my Sansa Clip+ and found the native interface to be inferior. Now I've been using Rockbox for a few days now and I find it great, except for one thing:

I like all my MP3s to be in alphabetical order in each Album, and so I don't feel the need to add track numbers to them. In the past, to reinforce that alphabetical order, I would add track numbers to each Album but it proved to be impractical in the long run as new files were added. So I did away with the track number altogether.

Now I find with Rockbox that with every track name with a number in it, it is trying to make up tracks for me, and with the alphabetical order being thrown out of whack once again, I find it quite annoying.

I've read about this heuristic algorithm, and I've heard that moves are afoot to either ditch it or make it optional, rather than mandatory - as it is, it does more harm than good, at least to me.

Any idea when this is going to happen, or is it already available?

Are you actually using the database, or the file view?  If you're browsing by filename, then the database's ability to try and guess track numbers shouldn't matter to you.

AMJF:
I tried the file view first, but nothing shows up in the Music folder in that mode, for some reason. Am I doing something wrong?

All my music is stored on the expandable memory card slot - is there a way I can select that in file view mode?

I have a Sansa Clip+ with 16Gb microSD card, BTW.

Yes, when the SD card is inserted, they'll be a <microsd> folder mounted in the file system.  Thats the microsd card.

Ah, I see now. Thanks.  ;)
